La nuit des sacs plastiques is a 2018 French animated short film directed by Gabriel Harel .

action

Agathe, almost 39, has decided to have children with her ex-boyfriend Marc-Antoine. She visits him at night in a club where he plays as a DJ. Marc-Antoine is irritated to see her and asks her to postpone the conversation until later. Only when she is approached by a strange man does he pull her to him. Meanwhile, plastic bags in the club have started to develop a life of their own. They crawl up the walls and attack people. One bag bites into Marc-Antoine's leg, another strangles a dog. Marc-Antoine and Agathe flee to Marc-Antoine's house; numerous victims of the plastic bags can be seen along the way. Agathe, however, hardly notices the chaos, as she constantly tries to confess to Marc-Antoine that she wants a child from him. Only when she, too, is attacked by plastic bags and at the last second saved by Marc-Antoine with a welding torch , does she admit that she would like to have children. She cries.

Marc-Antoine and Agathe flee from the plastic bags on a boat and Agathe defends Marc-Antoine from the aggressive bags. In the meantime, however, two bags have bitten into his legs and weaken him. When Agathe undresses and wants to sleep with him on the boat, he defends himself because it is too late. She lets the plastic bags kill Marc-Antoine. Shortly afterwards the bags also approach Agathe and fall upon her. A little later, Agathe climbs a hill in the lake on which there is a ruin. She is pregnant and shortly thereafter gives birth to several large plastic bags containing many small bags. Agathe watches as the bags float into the sky and take on the shape of putti .

production

La nuit des sacs plastiques was Gabriel Harel's second short animation film after Yul et le serpent from 2015. Harel had the idea for the film after his sister, while on the phone, said he was "attacked" by a wet plastic bag that the wind had blown into her face.

The film was initially shot as a real film. The filming locations were the Calanques near Marseille , especially Cap Croisette. The place where Agathe gives birth to her plastic bags is the Île Maïre . After the shooting, the footage was animated in 2D. The backgrounds come from comic book author Grégoire Carlé . The film is implemented in black and white; only the plastic bags are colorfully animated in the film.

La nuit des sacs plastiques premiered on May 17, 2018 as part of the Quinzaine des réalisateurs of the Cannes International Film Festival and was subsequently shown at the Odense International Film Festival (OFF) and the Festival du Court-Métrage de Clermont Ferrand .

Awards

Gabriel Harel was nominated for the Prix Illy in Cannes in 2018 for La nuit des sacs plastiques . In 2018 the film won the Odense International Film Festival's Børge Ring Award. La nuit des sacs plastiques won the 2020 César in the Best Animated Short Film category .
