The Wolf's Call - Decision in the Depth (Original title: Le chant du loup ) is a French feature film by Antonin Baudry from 2019.
action
On the Syrian coast near Tartus, four combat swimmers from the French Navy are surrounded by enemy troops. The Titane , a nuclear-powered hunting submarine of the French Forces Sous-Marines under the direction of Commander Grandchamp, has the task of safely taking the four men on board. Also on board is the young sonar acoustician Chanteraide, who is unusually talented at recognizing noises (in French military jargon, "Oreille d'or" = gold ear). Shortly before the combat swimmers are recorded, there is a fine signal on the sonar, but the noise cannot be clearly interpreted. Under pressure from comrades to analyze quickly, Chanteraide settles on the fact that it is not a hostile signal, but possibly just a living being. The combat swimmers were already on their way to the submarine in the sea when it became clear that the signal was from an enemy submarine, which is giving the location of the Titans to a nearby Iranian frigate . The sends a combat helicopter and attacks the Titans . Grandchamp manages to shoot down the helicopter with a grenade launcher at the last second.
Back in France, Chanteraide is demoted. After consulting with experts, the superiors believe that the signal was a drone . However, Chanteraide can't get the signal out of his head and he finds out in the archive that it was the signal from the Soviet submarine Timour III , which the French had already taken from their files as scrapped. Other countries confirm this assessment and Chanteraide is pardoned. Meanwhile, the conflict with Russia is intensifying: Russia has occupied the Finnish Åland Islands , so France decides to send parts of its army for protection. This also includes the Titans , now under the command of Commander D'Orsi, previously second in command of the Titans , and the Effroyable , a ballistic missile submarine , now under Grandchamp's command. Grandchamp decides to bring Chanteraide into his team. Chanteraide passes the entrance test, but traces of cannabis are found in his urine , so that he is declared unfit for use shortly before use and remains on land.
Shortly after the submarines had cast off, an alarm was triggered on land: It was found that the Timour III had fired an R-30 nuclear missile in the Bering Sea , which will finally hit France. An attempt to intercept the French army fails. While the French President orders a counterstrike against Russia, which the Effroyable is supposed to carry out, Chanteraide listens to the launching sound of the rocket more closely: he realizes that the rocket is too light and concludes that it was probably fired without warheads. It turns out that the Timour III has been in the possession of jihadists who want to provoke a nuclear war for quite some time . The President revokes the order to counterattack, but the Effroyable has already submerged and has ceased all radio communications in accordance with the protocol. It will not take notice of any revocations either, as any intervention is to be viewed as hostile-controlled according to the protocol. The President orders Commander Grandchamp and the Effroyable to be eliminated. In order to track down the submarine, Chanteraide is brought on board the Titane together with the admiral, called ALFOST .
The R-30 hits the Compiègne forest without causing any damage. The Titane follows the trail of the Effroyable , finds it at a high point, and tries to establish radio contact. However, Grandchamp refuses to communicate as required by the protocol. At the direction of the admiral, the Titane begins preparing to attack the Effroyable . D'Orsi tries to save his former boss Grandchamp and swims to the Effroyable by diving scooter . The men on board classify him as a combat swimmer and the Titans as hostile and shoot a torpedo. D'Orsi dies and the Titane is hit. When the Effroyable positions its ballistic missiles for the attack on Russia, Chanteraide can locate them again. The admiral orders a torpedo launch, the Effroyable in turn responds to this attack with a torpedo attack. Both submarines are hit, the Titane begins to sink. Besides the Admiral, only Chanteraide survived on the Titane . In a final radio message, he asks Grandchamp not to fire the missiles. Grandchamp destroys the attack mechanism before suffocating on board the Effroyable . The admiral gives Chanteraide the only life jacket on board that brings him to the surface. Chanteraides' eardrums burst during the rapid ascent ; He can draw attention to himself with a light signal and is rescued. A little later he takes part in a memorial service for the deceased soldiers.
