Michael Minkler (born May 14, 1952 in Los Angeles , California , USA ) is an American sound engineer .

biography

Michael Minkler comes from a family that has worked as a sound engineer for film since the beginning of the sound film era. So his grandfather Darrell Minkler worked at Vitaphone project from Warner Bros. and founded radio recorder , a company, the songs of Frank Sinatra , Bing Crosby and Tommy Dorset recorded. Father Don Minkler began his film career in the late 1940s and founded Producers Sound Service in 1964. Bob Minkler , Michael's uncle, won an Oscar in 1978 . With Bob and another uncle, Lee , Michael Minkler made 1983 a first in the history of the Oscars. For the first and so far only time three members of a family were nominated for an Oscar. Michael's son Christian also works as a sound engineer for the film; In 2020, father and son were nominated together for an Oscar for the first time for their work on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood .

After a four-year tenure at Warner Bros. Michael Minkler moved in 1980 to Lion's Gate Films by Robert Altman . There he took over the leadership and management of the sound mixing department. In 1984 Minkler went into business for himself and worked as a freelancer. In 1990 he helped set up the Skywalker Sound's Lantana Facility . Then Minkler went to Todd-AO . He still works there today.

In addition to his work as a sound engineer, Michael Minkler is a sought-after consultant. For Euphonix he helped develop the digital sound mixing that is standard today. Another development in which Minkler played a key role is Penteo Surround , a technology for processing stereo music.
