The Hell Trip (original title: Altered States ) is an American thriller from 1980 . The director was Ken Russell , the script was written by Paddy Chayefsky based on his own novel . The main roles were played by William Hurt , Blair Brown and Bob Balaban .

Scientists Eddie Jessup and Mason Parrish conduct experiments with an isolation tank . Jessup is the test subject himself; his devotion to science weighs on his marriage to his wife Emily. One day, Jessup tests the effects of drugs brought from Mexico that he takes in the isolation tank before going into the water. He transforms into a prehistoric man with primitive hunting instincts and wakes up naked in a zoo.

In one of the further experiments, Jessup transforms into a strange being; Emily barely manages to get it out of the tank. The experiments are discontinued. Nevertheless, Eddie transforms again in his own apartment the following night. Emily's presence and love allow him to return to human form.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was "technically sophisticated" and worked "with brilliant optical effects" . He gained "surprising new aspects" from the 'classic' topic and turned them into "impressive visions" . The film is “an intelligent horror film that plays with the repressed irrational” and packs this into a dark genre story” .

Awards

John Corigliano was nominated for the Oscar film award in the category of Best Music , and there was another nomination for Best Sound . William Hurt was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Young Actor. The film won the Saturn Award for makeup; Ken Russell , Paddy Chayefsky and the film for Best Science Fiction Film were nominated for the Saturn Award.
