John Adams - Freedom for America is an American miniseries hosted by HBO and executive producer includes two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks . It is based on the book of the same name by David McCullough from 2001 and tells of the political life of US President John Adams and his role in the founding of the United States. The seven-part mini-series was first broadcast on the cable broadcaster HBO from March 16 to April 20, 2008 .

John Adams received widespread critical acclaim and many awards, including four Golden Globe Awards and 13 Emmys .

The plot of the series reconstructs the first 50 years of the history of the United States and begins in 1770. Shown are the siege of Boston from 1775 to 1776 and the American Revolutionary War that followed . Other historically relevant stations that the series shows are the formation of the Continental Congress in 1774 and the signing of the Declaration of Independence just two years later.

At the same time, the authors reconstruct the lives of the politicians active at the time, and above all of the second president of the young United States, John Adams and his love for his wife Abigail. The seven-part miniseries ends with the death of the US politician in 1826.

Production and broadcast

The series, based on the book by Pulitzer Prize winner David McCullough , was filmed in 2007 on locations in Hungary and the US state of Virginia . The main actors were exclusively British or US-Americans who were born in states on the east coast of the United States , the original locations in film history. The first broadcast in the United States took place on Sundays from March 16 to April 20, 2008 on the cable broadcaster Home Box Office .

In Switzerland, the mini-series was shown in the original version with subtitles in the summer of 2009 on SF Zwei. The German-language first broadcast was also shown from January 13 to February 24, 2013 on Sky Atlantic HD .

At the 2008 Primetime Emmy Awards , the miniseries won the categories of Best Miniseries , Best Actor in a Miniseries or TV Movie for Paul Giamatti, Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or TV Movie for Tom Wilkinson, and Best Actress in a Mini Series or TV Movie for Laura Linney win.

At the 2009 Golden Globe Awards , John Adams won four of the five miniseries / telefilm awards given. At the Screen Actors Guild Awards 2009 , actors Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney won the award in the categories of Best Actress and Best Actor in a TV Movie or Mini- Series .
