Once upon a time ... (phrase)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Once upon a time is a typical introductory phrase for fairy tales , legends and similar stories . It has been used for several centuries and has become a hallmark for this type of text . The counterpart to this is often the final phrase and if they have not died, then they are still alive today (or:  and they lived happily to the end ).

This phrase became popular with the spread of the works of the Brothers Grimm and as a German translation of the Danish phrase in works by Hans Christian Andersen . It is used both in the written language and in the spoken language , but nowadays it is mostly perceived as archaic .
