Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

Mamma Mia! is an American - British musical comedy released in 2008 . Directed by Phyllida Lloyd , the script was written by Catherine Johnson , based on the plot of the jukebox musical Mamma Mia! , which includes hits from the pop band ABBA . The second part Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again opened in German cinemas on July 19, 2018. On this occasion, the second nationwide theatrical release of the original took place on May 10, 2018.

action

Single mother Donna and her 20-year-old daughter Sophie run a small, not particularly well-run hotel on a fictional Greek island called Kalokairi. The wedding of Sophie and her boyfriend Sky is imminent. On this occasion, Donna invites two childhood friends with whom she used to perform as the trio "Donna and the Dynamos". Her friend Tanya is now a wealthy, divorced woman and Rosie is a single writer .

Sophie found her mother's diary, read it secretly, and discovered the names of three men who could be her father. These are the successful architect Sam Carmichael, the adventurous writer Bill Anderson and Harry Bright, a London investment banker. Without informing her mother, she invites all three to the island in Donna's name. Sophie imagines that she will recognize her real father the first time she meets. He should then lead them to the altar at the wedding.

After the arrival of the three potential fathers on the island, however, she cannot immediately identify any of the three as her father and initially conceals from them that they were not actually invited by Donna. She tries to buy time by first accommodating the three in an outbuilding without their mother's knowledge. Donna finds the unexpected guests very quickly and wants to send them away again. A turbulent story develops, consisting of the processing of Donna's relationship chaos at the time and her feelings for Sam, the wedding preparations and the investigation of the question of which of the candidates Sophie's father is.

At the wedding, Sophie decides not to marry Sky yet, but to travel the world with him first, as Sky always wanted. Instead, Sam makes a spontaneous marriage proposal to Donna, which she eventually agrees to. In addition, Sam, Bill and Harry, who comes out as gay on this occasion , agree not to necessarily have to clarify the question of paternity, and are satisfied that they can each be a third of Sophie's father. At the following celebration, the two lonely writers Rosie and Bill get closer, and Rosie still has to do some convincing for a future together. In the end, Sky and Sophie board a boat and leave the island.

backgrounds

Abba and actor in the film Mamma Mia! at the premiere in Stockholm
  • The film was shot on Skiathos , Skopelos and the Pilio in Greece as well as in London and at Pinewood Studios in England . The cost of production was estimated to be $ 52 million.
  • The world premiere took place on June 30, 2008 in London. At the premiere in Stockholm on July 4, 2008, all four ABBA members could be seen together for the first time in 22 years in addition to the actors.
  • The film was released in Greek cinemas on July 3, 2008, in British cinemas on July 4, 2008 and in German-speaking cinemas on July 17, 2008.

All musical interludes were sung by the actors themselves, and these recordings were then played back during the shooting of the film scenes. Pierce Brosnan said after filming was over that he immediately accepted the offered role because he found the prospect of working with Meryl Streep in summery Greece extremely tempting. At first he didn't give much thought to the material and the singing role. It wasn't until he watched the stage version of the film in London that he realized what he was getting into; The dance scenes were also a great challenge for him. He then took singing lessons, but then, like the other participants, let his enthusiasm run wild on the set. In an interview, Colin Firth said: If he had seen himself in a crystal ball in this film years ago, he would never have believed it. Even if you couldn't admit to listening to ABBA songs, you couldn't escape the fascination of these songs.

The two male members of ABBA, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus , can be seen in brief cameo guest appearances in the film. Tom Hanks is also involved in this film as one of the executive producers.

The film grossed approximately $ 609.7 million worldwide by mid-August 2009, including approximately $ 144.1 million in cinemas in the United States. This makes the film the second most successful musical adaptation worldwide after Beauty and the Beast . The film was particularly successful in the United Kingdom, where it was able to replace Titanic as the most successful feature film based on sales that were not adjusted for inflation. The film's DVD sold more than any other in the UK, with more than five million copies by the end of 2008 alone.

Reviews

Ray Bennett wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on June 29, 2008 that the film was the most amusing of any movie this summer - or any previous summer. Streep is "sensationally good" - it is no exaggeration to think of an Oscar and compare her with previous female award winners such as Liza Minnelli , Barbra Streisand and Catherine Zeta-Jones .

The magazine Cinema said that the film was a "wonderful feel-good film with great actors and a lot of heart, drive and humor". The “outstanding” performance of the “strong” Meryl Streep was particularly praised, who gave the song The Winner Takes It All “tragic depth” with its interpretation. The film is "tailored to an audience of young and old girls" and is "a brightly colored happening" that also makes the men laugh.

The lexicon of international film , on the other hand, writes "[...] Due to the uninspired choreography, the uninspired staging and the vocally overwhelmed leading actors, instead of being in a good mood, the head shakes at the missed (genre) opportunities."

Awards

The film and leading actress Meryl Streep received nominations for the 2009 Golden Globe Awards . Meryl Streep won the People's Choice Award 2009 in the category “Favorite Song from a Soundtrack”, ie for the most popular song on a soundtrack, for the song Mamma Mia! . Meryl Streep received a Rembrandt Movie Award, as did Mamma Mia! even in the category of the best foreign language film.

The film's soundtrack was nominated for a Grammy Award 2009 and received a Golden Reel Award (for best sound). The film also received an Empire Award in 2009 in the “Best Soundtrack” category.

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating particularly valuable.

Pierce Brosnan was awarded the 2009 Golden Raspberry for Worst Supporting Actor .
