One of Us is a song by the Swedish pop group ABBA from 1981 and their last international hit . The song was written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus , the main vocals were taken over by Agnetha Fältskog .
In December 1981, the piece with the B-side Should I Laugh Or Cry was released as the first single from the album The Visitors and is also on the compilation album ABBA Gold - Greatest Hits . The piece, like The Winner Takes It All , is about a broken relationship.
Background and origin
The recording of One Of Us began on October 21, 1981, making it one of the last in these sessions . Working titles were initially number 1 and Mi Amore . The song begins with a delightful and lively melody, which eventually turns into a kind of reggae groove. Even mandolins were used here. The text described the real situation of the group: two divorced couples. ABBA manager Stig Anderson had concerns about the dark text, but in the end the decision was made in favor of the single release due to the typical ABBA characteristics, such as: B. the romantic impression and the multi-layered sound. In November 1981, Lasse Hallström directed a music video in his apartment.

One of Us became ABBA's last top five hit in Austria and the UK; in the latter, the single sold over 500,000 times. In Switzerland, after this single, only The Day Before You Came was in the top five. One Of Us was only able to top the charts in Germany, Belgium and Ireland . The single was also successful in South Africa (4th place), Spain (7th place) and Portugal (6th place).
