Greatest Hits Vol. 2 Gracias por la música
(1980)

Greatest Hits Vol. 2 is the second best-of album by the Swedish pop group ABBA . It was first published in Great Britain on October 26, 1979, and three days later it was published in Sweden and other countries. The album reached number 1 in Belgium, Great Britain and Canada, as well as the top ten in ten other countries. In a 1981 statistic by Polar Music , it was ranked fourth on the ABBA sales list. Even today it is one of the best-selling ABBA albums with around 7.5 million copies. Around one million copies were sold in Japan alone.

The album and its success

The album was released with the single from Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) connected. Stig Anderson , the group's manager, said that buyers of the new single should buy the new compilation right away. So it annoyed him all the more when the single rose to number 16 in the Swedish charts, while the album only came to number 20.

The material mainly includes tracks from the albums Arrival , ABBA - The Album and Voulez-Vous . Only Rock Me from the album ABBA was included on the track list, as it had reached the top 5 in the Australian charts in 1975 ; also the single Summer Night City released a year earlier . For reasons that have not yet been clarified, the two stereo channels on this album were swapped (both on the vinyl and on the CD version, which is no longer available today).

The release of Greatest Hits Vol. 2 coincided with the current concert tour of ABBA, which began on September 13 in North America and has continued in Europe since October 19, 1979. This further peak of its popularity helped the LP to a quick chart entry, especially in Great Britain, where it was number 1 for a total of four weeks and sold around 1.2 million copies. Greatest Hits Vol. 2 was also able to reach the top position in Canada . It remains ABBA's only number one album to this day.
