After the international success with Waterloo , the group began work on their third album in August 1974. So Long was one of the first songs recorded for this album. The sessions began on August 22, 1974; Over the next two months the song was subjected to various revisions. It seemed like exactly the right song, as the rhythm, arrangement and dynamics probably best suited the hit title Waterloo . Ultimately, however, the single release turned out to be the wrong decision, which Andersson later put on the Glen Studio, where So Long and other songs were recorded.

“The pictures we took there were never particularly good. They were way too hard and kind of metallic "

Success and failure

The single was an attempt to reach number 1 in the British charts again, but it failed. The single didn't even hit the charts in Great Britain, nor in the United States or Switzerland. So Long only made it into the top 10 in a few European countries, for example third in Austria. An appearance on the music program Spotlight, which was broadcast by ORF in November 1974 to accompany the ABBA tour on Austrian television, is likely to have led to this success. In Germany the single reached number 11.
