Skiathos ( Greek Σκιάθος ( f. Sg. ), Pronunciation : [ ˈskʲaθɔs ]) is a Greek island in the Northern Sporades . Together with some surrounding uninhabited islands, Skiathos forms a municipality in the Thessaly region . The coast of Skiathos has some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. While the north of the island is almost uninhabited, life takes place in the south, which is geared towards the needs of tourism from spring to late autumn.
location
Skiathos is located about 4 km east of the Pelion mountain range and 15 km northeast of Evia . The island of Skopelos is about 8 km to the east.
With a length of about 11 km and a width of about 5 km, the area is 47.212 km². This makes Skiathos the fourth largest and at the same time the smallest inhabited island in the Northern Sporades. It is formed by a partially wooded mountain range called Mytikas, which rises to 433 m .
Typical products from Skiathos are olives and wine .

history
The island of Skiathos was first mentioned by Herodotus in connection with the Battle of Artemision in 480 BC. Mentioned. The island joined the Attic League and remained under Athens' hegemony until it lost its independence. Philip II of Macedonia conquered Skiathos in 338 BC. From 168 BC. Skiathos belonged to the Roman province of Macedonia . In 395, Skiathos fell to the Byzantine Empire , which was able to exercise its rule until 1204. After the Fourth Crusade , the Republic of Venice took control of Skiathos. Even before the conquest of Constantinople (1453) the island was the target of pirates; the population withdrew to the Kástro, which was built in the 13th century. Chaireddin Barbarossa finally sacked the island in 1538. In 1660 Venice temporarily recaptured the island under Francesco Morosini . In 1807, even before the beginning of the Greek Revolution , the Evangelistria monastery became a base for the rebels. The resistance fighters hoisted the Greek flag there for the first time. In 1830 Skiathos became part of the First Hellenic Republic .

The Skiathos Island National Airport is known for its only 1628 m short runway and the resulting forced low approach over the sea. There are direct flight connections with Düsseldorf, Munich, Frankfurt, Graz, Vienna and Zurich as well as with other European cities.
Regular ferry connections with car ferries exist from the new port of Skiathos town with Skopelos , Alonnisos , Volos and Thessaloniki .
Attractions
Skiathos is known for its sandy beaches, of which there should be 60 to 66, the best known are the beaches Koukounariés, Lalária, Vromólimnos, Vassilias, Asélinos, Ammos, Achladiás, Mandráki, Maratha, Troulos, Ligaries, Banana, Mega Gialos and Nicotsára.
There are important monasteries on Skiathos such as the Evangelistria monastery or the now abandoned Moni Panagias Ikonistrias .
In addition, the ruins of the former capital Kástro, a former refuge during the pirate raids, and the Boúrtzi peninsula in Skiathos town are worth seeing.
Personalities
- The writer Alexandros Papadiamantis (1851–1911) was born on Skiathos. Among other things, he wrote the book Die Mörderin , which was also published in Germany. The main street in Skiathos Town and the airport are named after him, next to it there is the Papadiamantis Museum .
- The poet and prose writer Zisis Oikonomou (1911–2005) was born on Skiathos. In 1977 he received the poet's award from the Athens Academy for all of his poetic works and especially for his book “Hehre Stille” (“Αιθρία σιγή”). In 1995 he was honored with the Greek State Poetry Prize.
- The Romanian-born civil engineer Alexander Acatos came from Skiathos and was mainly involved in railway construction in Switzerland.
Others
In 1978, Skiathos was the location for the German feature film Naked and Hot in Mykonos , and parts of the 2008 Mamma Mia! . For example, the harbor scene was filmed in the old harbor of Skiathos Town.
