Zisis Ikonomou

Zisis Ikonomou ( Greek Ζήσης Οικονόμου [ 'Zizi ikɔ'nɔmu] also Oikonomou or Economou * 25. April 1911 in Skiathos , Greece ; † 3. August 2005 on Skiathos) was a Greek poet and prose - writer . In 1977 he received the poetry award of the Athens Academy for all of his poetic works and especially for his book " Hehre Stille" ( "Αιθρία σιγή" ). In 1995 he was honored with the Greek State Poetry Prize.

Life

Ikonomou spent his childhood on the Greek island of Skiathos. His father was the captain and owner of a sailing ship. He died when Zisis Ikonomou was 10 years old. His mother managed to raise him and his two siblings by working at the loom and trading in Skiathos carpets.

Zisis Ikonomou belongs to the interwar generation of Greek poets. His poetic career covers a wide thematic and stylistic area. In literature, Zisis Ikonomou first appeared in 1930 with a publication of texts in the magazine "Nea Genia". In 1934 his first collection of poems was published.

During the Greco-Italian War (1940/41) Ikonomou was an interpreter for Italian and German on the staff of the 3rd Military Corps. In the period from 1941 to 1945, during the Greek occupation, a small ship served as residence for him and his wife Eugenia (née Deligianni). They traveled the islands and seas of the northern Aegean and the Gulf of Evia - until they were considered suspicious and harassed in interrogations by Italians, Germans and even their own compatriots. His excellent language skills, sincerity and fearlessness helped Ikonomou to escape the many dangerous situations of that time.

Ikonomou was extremely gifted with languages. He mastered 10 languages and dealt with life issues that transcend culture, classes and politics. Ikonomou loved to travel. He published his experiences, findings and impressions in magazines and newspapers - under his name, but also under a pseudonym .

From the mid-1950s to 1976 he paused his publications and did research on metalinguistics, sociology and politics . His main goal was the search for a uniform worldview that should draw elements from all areas of knowledge. Starting from an optimistic worldview of futurism and surrealism and the praise of modern technologies, he quickly moved into the phase of retreat and reservation towards western rationalism and oriented himself towards an individualistic worldview that was influenced by the study of eastern religions (mainly of Buddhism ) and by philosophers such as Schopenhauer , Berdjajew and Keyserling . His search had an effect on his poetry, which gradually found itself in a language that was ever simpler and more effective. He was also involved in the theater and wrote several plays.

Many acquaintances and good friendships developed during his time in Athens. His intellectual and literary friends in Athens included u. a. Dimis Apostolopoulos, Sarantaris, Varikas, Ritsos and Kazantzakis .

Ikonomou always remained an impartial researcher. His independent, free thinking and acting often aroused resistance from his compatriots and literary colleagues.

In old age Ikonomou returned to his home island of Skiathos.
