Mouzaki ( Greek Μουζάκι ( n. Sg. )) Is a municipality with 13,122 inhabitants in the southwest of the Greek region of Thessaly . It was formed on January 1, 2011 from the municipalities of Mouzaki, Ithomi and Pamisos, which in turn came into being in 1997 through the amalgamation of a total of 27 rural municipalities. The administrative center is the small town of Mouzaki (1961 inhabitants).

The west of the municipality lies on the eastern slope of the northern Agrafa Mountains , which form the watershed between Acheloos and Pinios . A mountain range with the peaks Karavoula ( 1862  m ), Koulkoutsari ( 2016  m ) and Zygoroulivado or Kazarma ( 1971  m ) separates Mouzaki from the south-western neighboring municipality Argithea . The Pamisos rises at Koulkoutsari and flows into the main river, the Pinios, at Agnandero. The city of Mouzaki lies at its exit from the Agrafa Mountains into the Thessalian plain, three kilometers to the east, Mavrommati extends on the northern edge of the mountains. The middle of the municipal area in the municipality of Ithomi is similar to a low mountain range and rises to around 1000 meters, here Limni Plastira forms  the southern neighboring municipality. The east of Mouzaki with the municipality of Pamisos lies entirely in the Thessalian Plain, neighboring communities are Pyli and Trikala to the north, Palamas to the west and Karditsa in the southeast .

Community logo

The official logo of the community shows the Greek national hero Georgios Karaiskakis on horseback. He grew up in a monastery near Mavrommati. A district of Mouzaki was named after him in 1971. The deciduous forest south of Mouzakis and Mavrommatis is also called Dasos Karaiskaki (Δάσος Καραϊσκάκη).

Church history

After the annexation of Thessaly in 1881, two municipalities were formed which were named after ancient cities in the region. Mouzaki became the seat of the community Gomfi (after Gomphoi , today's village Gomfi was called Rapsista until 1930), the west of today's community area formed the community Ithomi (after the ancient city of Ithōmē) with its seat in Fanari. Agnandero, Paleochori and Rizovouni were assigned to the community of Silanes. In 1912 these communities were divided into numerous small rural communities. In 1997 three parishes were formed again, with the old Gomfi now being called Mouzaki and the area of ​​the old parish Ithomi being divided: Mavrommati, Gelanthi and Magoulitsa came to Mouzaki, Kranea and Magoula together with the three easternmost villages formed the newly created parish Pamisos. With the administrative reform of 2010 , these three municipalities became the Mouzaki municipality.

Community structure

The 27 municipalities that existed until 1997 have had the status of urban districts (Ez. Gr. Dimotiki kinotita ) - namely Mouzaki and Mavrommati - or local communities (topiki kinotita) since 2011 and elect a council or an individual representative as local representative, depending on the number of inhabitants.
