The school building at Am Wandrahm 23 in Bremen - Mitte is a listed building .

history

The arts and crafts training in Bremen was connected to the trade museum until 1916. In 1917 a competition was announced among the Bremen architects for the construction of a new state school of arts and crafts. The winner of the competition was the architect Rudolf Jacobs . The jury liked the “urban development treatment of the grouping” with the “ornamental courtyard of great charm” to the Kleine Helle school (today Altes Gymnasium ) and praised the “great delicacy” of the facades “in its elegant simplicity”.

The four-storey, clinkered school building at Am Wandrahm 23 and on Karolinastraße could not be realized until 1922, after the First World War, according to Jacobs' plans. The design is influenced by Dutch-Low German forms. The fourth floor stands out clearly from the lower floors. A round staircase divides the building. The house shows expressive forms of jewelry and classic-modern influences (compare with the Amsterdam School ). Large window zones for the classrooms and studios determine the exterior as well as various types of decorative clinker cladding in the parapet fields. Inside there are elaborate, turquoise green / black decorated wall ceramics in the entrance hall and in the library room.

The sculptor Engelhard Tölken created sculptures for the house.

In 1955 a gallery was installed in the entrance hall. In the early 1968, according to the plans of Helmut Reischel, a three / four-story building made of clinker brick, concrete and partly with large-format glazing was added to the existing building in the direction of Kleine Helle .

The Technical Institute for traders from 1873 - 1880 connected to 1916 with the Commercial Museum Bremen  - was in 1916 State School of Applied Arts , 1934 Nordic Art Academy , 1946 State Art School , 1970 College of Design and since 1979 the wider University of formative art and music since 1988 the name Hochschule für Künste Bremen . However, it has been at different locations since the 1990s and 2003.

Today (2014) the buildings contain areas of the old grammar school and areas of the Walle school center .
