Sofades ( Greek Σοφάδες ( m. Pl. )) Is a small Greek town and municipality ( Dimos Sofadon Δήμος Σοφάδων) in the southwest of the administrative region of Thessaly . The municipality was significantly enlarged in 1997 and 2010 by incorporations and is now divided into five municipal districts and 31 localities, of which 14 form the municipality of Sofades, which corresponds to the municipality from 1997 to 2010.

5,556 of the total of 18,864 inhabitants of the municipality live in the small town of Sofades itself; the remaining population of the municipality is distributed among the remaining 30 localities. The municipality is located in the southwestern part of the Thessalian Plain, south of Karditsa and Trikala and southwest of Larisa , northwest of Lamia and west of Volos . Your area is mainly used for agriculture.

The ancient settlement of Kierion (Κιέριον) is said to have been located near the modern city of Sofades. The name of the municipality Sofades was first described as Sofou (Σοφού) around the year 1454. On April 30, 1954, at 1:02 p.m. local time, a severe earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale occurred in the immediate vicinity of Sofades .

The Greek inhabitants of the region around Sofades are described as so-called Karagounides (Καραγκούνηδες).

Sofades is connected to Volos by national road 30 via Domokos . Sofades also has a connection to the Greek railway network.
