Tyrnavos ( Greek Τύρναβος ( m. Sg. ), Formerly Tournavos Τούρναβος) is a small Greek town and municipality in the Greek region of Thessaly . It is located southwest of Mount Olympus , 22 km south of the small town of Elassona and north of the city of Larisa . The Titarisios River , an important tributary of the Pinios, flows through Tyrnavos . 3 km east of the city of Tyrnavos is the only (small) lake in the Larisa regional district.
The municipality of Tyrnavos was considerably enlarged in 2010 through the incorporation of neighboring Ambelonas and since then has consisted of two municipal districts, in the municipality of Tyrnavos the majority of the inhabitants live in the core city of Tyrnavos (12,572). The local community Argyropoulio has 1670 inhabitants, Damasio 1444 and Dendra Tyrnavou 1291. The municipality Ambelonas consists of the municipality Ambelonas (6083) and the local communities Vryotopos (585), Deleria (655) and Rodia (732 inhabitants).
Tyrnavos is known for its carnival celebrations.
The national road 3 leads from Larisa in the south via Tyrnavos, Elassona and Servia to Kozani .
