Rigas Fereos ( Greek Ρήγας Φεραίος ( m. Sg. )) Is a community that was established in 2011 north of Volos in the Greek city of Thessaly . It is based in the small town of Velestino (3044 inhabitants).

Rigas Fereos is named after the Greek national hero Rigas Velestinlis , who was born in Velestino and named himself with the ethnonym Fereos (from ancient Greek Φεραίος Pheraios ). The municipality around Velestino, which was formed after the annexation of Thessaly to modern Greece in 1881, was also called Pherai Feres in 1883 after its ancient name . The name was abandoned in 1912, but officially adopted again in 1997 when Velestino was reunited with four small rural parishes to form a larger municipality of Feres. With the administrative reform in 2010 , a new municipality was formed from Feres and the municipalities of Karla and Keramidi, which was named Rigas Fereos.

The municipality extends to the west and north of the municipalities of Volos and Zagora-Mouresi . In the center it forms part of the Velestino plain of the Thessalian Basin, which is separated to the south from the Pagasitic Gulf by hill country . The plain continues in the northwestern neighboring municipality of Kileler . The northeastern municipality lies on the northwest flank of the Pilio , at the main summit of which it reaches up to a few kilometers. To the north of it, the Pelion Mountains continue in Mavrovouni , on the eastern slope of which facing the Aegean Sea the towns of Keramidi and Veneto lie and to which the municipality of Agia joins further north . On the western flank of the Mavrovouni, west of Kanalia and Kerasia, Lake Karla, which was drained in 1962 (in ancient times Boibēis Βοιβηίς , after the town of Boibe ) is being restored. West of Velestino rises the small low mountain range Chalkodonio ( Χαλκοδόνιο ), which reaches 725  m in Kileler . Here Rigas Fereos borders Farsala to the west and Almyros to the south .

The Greek A1 , which connects Athens with Thessaloniki , runs directly past Velestino, the A 12 branches off at Velestino to the east in the direction of Volos. Velestino station is on the Larisa – Volos railway line, built in 1884. The Nea Anchialos Airport is 20 km south of Velestino, but plays a role just for summer tourism. The two Greek urban centers, which are connected to international air traffic, are just under 200 km north (Thessaloniki) and a good 300 km south (Athens- Piraeus ).

Community structure

Some villages and settlements around Velestino were Çiftlik's Turkish landowners in Ottoman times and had Turkish names. They were renamed in the 20th century.

The ten municipalities that existed until 1997 have had the status of an urban district (singular in Greek dimotiki kinotita ) - namely Velestino - or of local communities (topiki kinotita) since 2011 and elect a council or an individual representative as local representative, depending on the number of inhabitants.
