Velestino ( Greek Βελεστίνο ( n. Sg. )) Is a small town in the Greek region of Thessaly . It is the seat of the municipality of Rigas Fereos and is located in the hills that limit the south-eastern Thessalian plain at an altitude of 120 m above sea level . Velestino is located 17 km west of Volos and 40 km southeast of Larisa . It has a train station for the regional train from Larisa to Volos and previously served as a connection for Volos to EO 1 . Today the route of the A1 (Athens - Larisa - Thessaloniki) runs east of the city. The Greek writer and revolutionary Rigas Feraios was born in Velestino in 1757. Traditionally settled Vlachs in Velestino.
history
Under Ottoman rule, Velestin was the seat of a Kaza in the Sanjak Tirhala . In 1881 Velestin and the whole of Thessaly were ceded to Greece by the Treaty of Berlin (1878) . The Battle of Velestino during the Turkish-Greek War in 1897 was fought in the area of the place.
