Tsoungria ( Greek Τσουγκριά , ( f. Sg. ) / ( N. Pl. )) Is a small, uninhabited island in the Northern Sporades (Magnesian Islands). It is located about 2.7 km south of the port of Skiathos in the extension of the Pounta peninsula , which borders the port of Skiathos to the east, and the islet of Maragos . At the northern tip of Tsoungria, the Skareli reef is shown on some maps . To the west of the island, approx. 700 m away, lies the small neighbor Tsoungriaki .

geography

The island has an area of 1.173 km² and has several beaches in the north and west, which are currently regularly visited by tourist boats from Skiathos and Achladias . The two beaches on the west coast are silted up bays, where wetlands have been preserved after a few meters. The island stretches for about 2 km from north to south and is about 700 m wide at its widest point. The east coast has steep banks in many places. The south coast stretches to the easternmost point of the island. The island is mainly forested with pine trees .

Church of Agii Floron ke Lavros

There are only smaller kiosks on the island. In addition to the Kosmas tavern , which is only operated in season, there are only the remains of an old oil mill in the interior of the island. In the early 1960s, the shipowner Thomas Epifaniadis (Θωμάς Επιφανειάδης) commissioned the architect Alexandros Vogiatzis (Αλέξανδρος Βογιατζής) to build a little church in memory of Saints Floros and Lavros (Agios Floros). The two saints were twin brothers who lived as stonemasons in Oupliana in Illyria (Ουλπιάνα της Ιλλυρίας) in Byzantine times . Her holiday is August 18th. Vogiatzis designed the church with awe for the nature of the place from local quarry stones and in harmony with the landscape. The church is one of the island's attractions. A small path leads from the northern beach to the hill. The church is known by the locals as the Ekklisia tou Gremou (εκκλησία του γκρεμνού - Church of the Cliff).

ecology

Due to the wetlands behind the beaches, the island is an important refuge for birds in the Sporades.

Ownership

The island is partly owned by the Evangelistrias monastery and other parts of the island belong to the families Epifaniadis and Fix (Επιφανειάδη, Φιξ). A sale of the island has been planned for several years.
