In 1807 a group of Greek freedom fighters met in the monastery and swore an oath of freedom on the newly designed flag of Greece , at that time the white cross on a sky-blue background, which had been woven in the monastery. Among the freedom fighters were Theodoros Kolokotronis , Andreas Vokos Miaoulis , Thymios Vlachavas , Nicotsaras and others.

In 1839 the philosopher Theophilos Kaïris was arrested in the monastery.
