In 1655 an aged monk is said to have had a nocturnal apparition and soon afterwards discovered the eponymous icon that was illuminated at night in a pine tree in the forest. Soon after, pirate looting was halted after Skiathos became Venetian . Miraculous powers are attributed to the icon. It is mostly kept in the main church Tris Ierarches in Skiathos-Ort. Twice a year, however, the patronage festival is celebrated: The discovery is celebrated on the 1st Sunday after July 1st and on November 20th there is an elaborate procession from the main church to the monastery.
