Jukebox musical

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A jukebox musical is a film or stage musical without an original score or score .

Either a potpourri of already published songs is embedded in a plot in these musicals (e.g. everyone says: I love you and Singin 'in the Rain ), or a story is constructed around these songs that is based on the lyrics (e.g. as Mamma Mia! , Showbiz ) or possibly with the biographies of the composer or performer (z. B. Piaf je t'aime related). Sometimes the lyrics of the songs are adapted more or less strongly. An example of this is the song "Radio Ga Ga" from We Will Rock You .

Even musicals that use large parts of an original score but are enriched by other hits (often by the same composer or artist) or provided with a new book are sometimes referred to as jukebox musicals. B. My One and Only .

A distinction must be made between jukebox musicals and pure tribute shows , which are not about telling a story with the help of music, but rather that imitators perform the hits of a musician, a band or an era. For marketing reasons, organizers of such tribute shows like to refer to them as musicals, but this is not the case.
