Jersey Boys is a jukebox musical . The music was written by Bob Gaudio , the lyrics by Bob Crewe , and the book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice. The emergence, success and dissolution of the rock 'n' roll group The Four Seasons are presented in a documentary style . The title refers to New Jersey , the origin of the band members. The musical is divided into the four seasons, each narrated by a different group member, each showing its own perspective on the story and the music. Songs used include Big Girls Don't Cry , Sherry , December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night) , My Eyes Adored You , Stay , Can't Take My Eyes Off You , Working My Way Back to You and Rag Doll . Jersey Boys premiered on Broadway in 2005 and has since played in London's West End , Las Vegas, Chicago, Toronto, Melbourne, Singapore, South Africa and the Netherlands. In 2006 Jersey Boys won four Tony Awards , including Best Musical, and the 2009 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical.

Emergence

Starting in 2000, Bob Gaudio , a member of The Four Seasons , tried to write a musical from the group's songs. He hired the book authors Rick Elice and Marshall Brickman and Des McAnuff as directors. Brickman suggested retelling the band's story instead of using the songs for a new story. Brickman was brought in on the project because "it's a classic American story: from dishwasher to millionaire and back again." Little was known to the public about the band's history as the magazines wrote little about it at the time. Brickman and Elice also used material from interviews with band members Frankie Valli and Tommy DeVito . Brickman noticed that each member of the band had their own view of what was going on during the active time of the group. Eventually they trusted DeVito, who said, “Don't listen to the boys. I'll tell you what really happened. ”For Elice, this was an aha experience, and the contradictions in her narratives due to selective perception led to the presentation of the story from four perspectives. The authors also contacted family members of Mafia boss Gyp DeCarlo to ensure their account was correct. Although Gaudio was one of the original developers of the musical, he was not involved in the creative process during rehearsals and only joined the ensemble at the premiere. Gaudio, Valli, and DeVito had chosen to retire from musical development because they weren't objective, and they left Brickman, Elice, and McAnuff to bring the story to the stage. However, they retained the right to terminate the project if they did not like it.

Ces soirées-là , a modern rap song from 2000, will be heard. Tommy DeVito appears, introduces himself, and explains that the song is a December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night) cover versionof the Four Seasons . He offers to tell the story of the band, how it started with The Variety Trio with his brother Nick DeVito and his friend Nick Massi. He discovered the teenager Frankie Castelluccio, took him under his wing and taught him everything he knew (The Early Years: A Scrapbook) . During those first years Nick Massi practiced singing with Frankie, Tommy went to jail and out, Frankie changed his last name to Valli, Tommy and Frankie developed a good relationship with Mafia boss Gyp DeCarlo and Frankie fell in love with Mary Delgado and married her. Musically, the band was still experimenting and they changed their name and sound, but to no great success. One day friend and Jersey boy Joe Pesci comesto Tommy and tells him that he knows a singer and songwriter who is the perfect fourth man for the band: Bob Gaudio.

summer

Bob Gaudio takes on the narrative role and explains to the audience that it doesn't matter what Tommy would have said. He is not a stranger because he has already released the hit single Short Shorts . He listens to the band with Joe Pesci and is immediately impressed by Frankie's voice. Bob plays the song he has just written, Cry for Me, on the piano, Frankie, Nick Massi and finally Tommy join in with vocals, bass and guitar. Although Tommy is initially skeptical, they negotiate a contract that Bobby, even though he is still a teenager, will join the band. The band gets a contract from producer Bob Crewe , but only as a back-up band (backup sessions) . Crewe believes the band is having an identity crisis and calls for a final decision on the band name and sound. The band is called Four Seasons after the bowling alley , and Bob writes the three songs that eventually make them stars: Sherry , Big Girls Don't Cry and Walk Like a Man . In the course of her success, Bob also had a personal experience of losing his virginity ( December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night) ) . The band success means more appearances, and on their tour they discover the girl band The Angels ( My Boyfriend's Back ) . Unfortunately, touring life puts a strain on Frankie and Mary's marriage, so they divorce ( My Eyes Adored You ) . The band continues to have chart successes ( Dawn (Go Away) ) until a loan shark demands money from Tommy after a concert (Walk Like a Man / reprise) .

Nick Massi, who is now the narrator, explains that Bob was only focused on the band success and the future and failed to notice that the band had been in trouble for some time. Tommy runs into debt, and an overlooked bill from a previous tour ends up jailed for a weekend, straining Tommy's and Bob's relationship ( Big Man in Town ) . Nick observes that Tommy becomes jealous of Frankie's success and his relationship with Bob deteriorates. He tries to seduce Frankie's new friend Lorraine. The two don't confront each other, but the old friendship is no longer what it used to be. When the loan shark demands from the band the $ 150,000 Tommy owes him, Frankie asks Gyp DeCarlo for help, despite Tommy's objection that he doesn't need it ( Beggin ' ) . The band, DeCarlo and the loan shark come to an agreement: Tommy is to go to Las Vegas, where the Mafia will keep an eye on him, and the band will take over the debt, along with half a million untaxed income that Tommy hid from the group . At this time, Nick explains that he is tired of all things and he wants to stop. ( Stay / Let's Hang On! ) .

winter

Taking on the narrative role, Frankie explains that his relationship with Tommy is not ideal, even if he owes a lot to him. Nor does he understand why Nick decided to leave. Frankie and Bob find a replacement to keep the band as a quartet ( Opus 17 (Don't You Worry 'bout Me) ) until Bob laments that he never really got into the spotlight, that Frankie is more of a soloist, and it is "Frankie and The Four Seasons" should be called. Frankie's relationship with his daughter Francine is strained privately and he breaks up with his girlfriend Lorraine ( Bye, Bye, Baby (Baby, Goodbye) ) . Musically, Frankie continues to enjoy success thanks to Bob's songs. He hits the jackpot with C'mon Marianne and the rarely played Can't Take My Eyes Off You , which Bob is fighting for. Coupled with the success of Working My Way Back to You , Frankie and Bob eventually pay off Tommy's debt, and Frankie's life is fine until his daughter Francine dies of a drug overdose (Fallen Angel) .

Enough

Bob Crewe describes the inclusion of the Four Seasons in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame , which in 1990 brought the original four members together on stage for the last time ( Rag Doll ) . Each member briefly informs the audience about how proud they were to be part of the band and what they are doing now. ( Who Loves You ) .

Reviews

Ben Brantley of The New York Times wrote: “The audience is raging. I'm talking about the real, mostly middle-aged audience at the August Wilson Theater who have forgotten what year they live in, how old they are, or most importantly, that John Lloyd Young is not Frankie Valli. And everything that has led up to this curtain feels as real and alive for a second as clapping your hands. "

Charles Spencer of The Daily Telegraph wrote, "Overpaid, over-sexed and all over here: I suspect it will be some time before London says Bye Bye Baby (baby goodbye) to the phenomenal Jersey Boys ."

Benedict Nightingale of The Times wrote, “Oh What a Night. There were times when I thought the performers even had the Beatles echoed in the musical texture. "

Quentin Letts of the Daily Mail wrote, “I have to say I enjoyed it. This is a great hit from a show with fantastic songs. "

The Boys in Concert

Four cast members from the original Broadway production, Christian Hoff, Michael Longoria, Daniel Reichard and J. Robert Spencer, embarked on a 2010 tour called The Boys in Concert . Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice sued the production, claiming that the four stole "songs, stage elements and the copyrighted logo" that portrayed it as the Jersey Boys' authorized performance . The production was renamed The Hitmen 4 , and Hoff, Longoria, Reichard, and Spencer counterclaims alleging that the allegations were false and that it was reputational damage. On September 23, 2010, Valli and the company dropped the original lawsuit on condition that the production name be changed to differentiate itself from the Jersey Boys .
