action

The pretty Sherrie from Oklahoma barely arrived in Los Angeles in 1987 and was robbed on the street and lost her record collection as a result. Drew, who is watching the raid, cannot prevent it. He then makes sure that Sherrie gets a job as a waitress at The Bourbon Room club where he works. The owner of The Bourbon Room Dennis Dupree is currently planning a big show with the eccentric rock star Stacee Jaxx and his band Arsenal in order to solve his financial problems with the proceeds from the concert. Meanwhile, Patricia Whitmore, the mayor's wife, has declared war on the club and Stacee Jaxx and wants to see that the club is closed.

In the following time, Sherrie and Drew get closer and become a couple. When an opening act is canceled at short notice, Sherrie persuades her boss Dennis to use Drew as the opening act before Stacee's big concert that evening. Dennis agrees. Before the performance, Stacee Jaxx gives an interview to the Rolling Stone reporter Constance Sack. Patricia Whitmore and her supporters demonstrate outside the club.

Before the performance, Sherrie brings a bottle of scotch into Stacee's dressing room. Before Drew goes on stage, he sees Sherrie coming out of Stacee's dressing room and believes that she cheated on him with Stacee. After his appearance, Drew and Sherrie argue, and Sherrie leaves the club angrily. Sherrie tries to find a new job over the next few days, but is unsuccessful. Finally, Justice Charlier offers her a job as a waitress in a table dance bar . Later she also works as a dancer.

The hoped-for windfall for the club The Bourbon Room does not materialize because the manager of Stacee, Paul Gill, collects the entire income. The Bourbon Room is still on the financial edge.

After his successful appearance as the opening act, Drew is persuaded by Paul Gill to sign with him. After the marketing as a rock star didn't go as expected, Paul tried to turn Drew into a pop star with a boy band . The article in Rolling Stone , which has now appeared, criticizes Stacee and especially his manager Paul. Stacee then fires his manager.

Sherrie and Drew meet again by chance. Only now does Drew realize that Sherrie didn't sleep with Stacee. To show Sherrie that she still means something to him, Drew buys back the records that were stolen from her at the beginning of the film.

In front of the Bourbon Room , there is a confrontation between the supporters and the opponents of the club. It is revealed that the mayor's wife is a former supporter of Stacee Jaxx and that her fight against the club is a personal vengeance. In the Bourbon Room Drew, meanwhile, has made an appearance with his boyband and was booed by the audience. When Sherrie shows up, Drew leaves the stage and the two make up again. To save the evening, Sherrie goes on stage and sings a song written by Drew with Drew.

In the end, Stacee, Drew and Sherrie stand together on stage at a big concert and sing the song written by Drew.

criticism

“The result takes getting used to for Central European temperaments, because it combines three areas in which excessive overacting is part of the good sound: the 80s, musicals and rock music. Accordingly, the film is bursting with great poses and pathetic gestures. You have to get used to it first. But when that is done, you can enjoy the convincing acting performances and funny dialogues. "

“Ultimately, this film doesn't take anything seriously, neither the music business nor the plot time, nor the love between Dupree and Lonny. There is and only one person has fun here: Tom Cruise throws himself into the role of the permanently intoxicated rock star with the same comedic gusto that he showed in his role as a film producer in Tropic Thunder . That's nice, but not enough to breathe life into this strangely sterile film. "

“The flick doesn't take itself very seriously and the actors clearly had a good time, but that doesn't really make it any better. This is definitely not a strong movie. But it's often enough fun, especially for everyone who could speak 25 years ago. "

“Cruise plays Stacee in a style that is remarkably close to his lestat in Interview with a Vampire (who happened to want to become a rock star). […] Cruise's performance dwarfs everything else in Rock of Ages; the guy can also sing full blast. "

With Metacritic, the film achieved a Metascore of 47%. 41% of the film reviews collected by Rotten Tomatoes are positive (as of October 2012).
