Mercury Records (USA) and Phonogram (Europe) had released the Def Leppard album Hysteria on August 3, 1987, which had topped the respective music charts in Great Britain, the USA , Norway , Australia and New Zealand and number 10 in Germany . With over 20 million units sold, it is the group's most successful album and has received numerous awards worldwide .

Even before the album was released, the song Animal was released, which reached the top twenty of the singles charts in the USA, Great Britain and Switzerland. This title was followed by the release of Women on August 11, 1987. However, this single was only released in the United States, where it reached number 80 on the Billboard Hot 100 .

Pour Some Sugar on Me was born when Joe Elliott tried an idea on the acoustic guitar. Music producer | Producer Lange encouraged the group to work out the idea. Guitarist Phil Collen explained the creation:

"Because Joe sings so rap-like in the verses, I came up with a riff that leaned a bit on Grandmaster Flash's White Lines , that old rap number that was pretty popular in the early eighties. In the end we had Pour Some Sugar on Me completely in the can in ten days, that was a real record for us. "

Pour Some Sugar on Me was released in Europe on September 7, 1987 and was sold as a vinyl single , cassette single and only in Germany as a CD single . In Great Britain, on September 14, 1987, a "shaped single" was also released in a triangular shape.

In addition to the single, a maxi single with a remix made by Robert John Lange was also offered, which was a so-called extended version with a length of 5:37 minutes. On the back was the single version (4:26) of the song as well as the song I Wanna Be Your Hero, which had not been released on any album until then .

In the US, the single was only released on May 6, 1988. There, as a result of the release, the sales of the album also rose, which until then had sold well, but not outstandingly. Almost a year after its publication, Hysteria reached number one on the Billboard 200 in July 1988 and held that rank for six weeks.

The album cover was created by British artist Andie Airfix . In fact, the image used was an enlarged section of the graphic that Airfix had already used for the cover of Hysteria .

The band's logo is shown in the upper left corner of the cover , the upper right half shows a wide open, perhaps screaming mouth, over which a multi-colored, grid-like graphic is placed. Two horizontal yellow and red lines delimit the lower fifth of the cover, the title name is written in small caps underneath.

Cover versions

The song was often by other artists gecovert , the first time in 1994 by Millie Jackson for her album Rock 'n' Soul. The Marginal Phrophets recorded the song as did Cleaner, Groovics, the Countdown Singers and Cornbread Red. The LA Guns recorded their 2010 version for the album Covered in Guns , as did Richard Cheese and The Maine . The commercially most successful cover version comes from Tom Cruise , who recorded the song in 2012 for the soundtrack of the film Rock of Ages . Hayseed Dixie recorded the song in 2015; the (2019) most recent known recording was made by Ninja Sex Party in 2017 .

Tech-wise, Def Leppard recorded a cover version of their own song in 2012 when they re-recorded the title for distribution via online music services as Pour Some Sugar on Me 2012 .

reception

Pour Some Sugar on Me was awarded a gold record for 500,000 singles sold in the USA and a silver record for 200,000 copies in the UK.
