Millie Jackson
Millie Jackson (* 15. July 1944 as Mildred Jackson in Thomson , Georgia ) is an American R & B - singer and songwriter , which celebrated its greatest success in the 1970s. By 1988, "one of the best soul singers ever" ( Sounds ) had 39 hits in the American R&B charts. Her most successful albums include Caught Up (1974), Feelin 'Bitchy (1977) and Get It Out'cha System (1978), each of which has been sold over 500,000 times in the United States and has been awarded gold.
Career
After the early death of her mother, Jackson moved to Newark with her father , and as a teenager she lived with her aunt in Brooklyn . At first she worked as a photo model. In 1969 she got her first record deal with MGM Records , but the only single for the label, Little Bit of Something , was unsuccessful. She then moved to Spring Records, a small division label of Polydor , and in 1971 she placed her first single in the US R&B charts with A Child of God (It's Hard to Believe) , the highest rating was 22nd in 1972 followed with Ask Me What You Want and My Man, a Sweet Man , two singles in the R&B top ten. Jackson stated in interviews that her voice was pitched higher on the recordings of her early years .
In 1973 Jackson celebrated their most successful single with Hurts so Good , the title not only reached number 3 on the R&B charts, but also number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 . The song also appeared on the soundtrack of the blaxploitation - feature film A Cleopatra Jones , who by JJ Johnson was composed and in addition to Jackson and Joe Simon , her male counterpart at Spring Records, presented.
In 1974, Jackson received a Grammy nomination for (If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right for the only time in her career . This was followed by R&B hits such as Leftovers (1975), Bad Risk (1976) and If You're Not Back in Love by Monday (1977), which Jackson also made the US pop charts for the last time. 1979 she took with Isaac Hayes the album Royal Rappin’s on. Until the mid-1980s Jackson more singles on the R & B charts was able to place, including cover versions of songs by artists as diverse as Merle Haggard and Boney M . In 1986 she signed with Jive Records and with Hot! Wild! Unrestricted! Crazy Love (1986, 9th place) and Love Is a Dangerous Game (1987, 6th place) other singles in the R&B charts. She last placed there in 1988 with Something You Can Feel .
Jackson has not had any major sales successes since the late 1980s, but she is still in conversation because of her album cover motifs. The cover picture of Back to the Shit was selected as one of the worst album covers of all time by The Guardian , among others . In 1986 Jackson released a cover version of the song I Feel for You, written by Prince , on her album An Imitation of Love .
Since the mid-2000s, Jackson works as a presenter of a weekday afternoon show at the radio station KKDA AM in Dallas . In 2015 she was inducted into the R&B Hall of Fame.
Private
Millie Jackson is the mother of the singer Keisha Jackson (* 1965) and also has a son. She was married once. The marriage lasted only eight months.
