Joe Simon (musician)
Joe Simon (born September 2, 1936 in Simmesport , Louisiana ; † December 13, 2021 ) was a Grammy- winning American soul and R&B singer who had a total of 49 hits in the American R&B charts between 1965 and 1981 . He was one of the most successful artists of his genre in the 1960s and 1970s.
Career
His biggest hits were The Chokin 'Kind (1969), Power of Love (1972) and Get Down, Get Down (Get on the Floor) (1975), all three of which reached number one on the R&B charts and were also huge hits USA pop hit lists. Simon had other hits with Drowning in the Sea of Love (1971) and the title theme of the blaxploitation classic Cleopatra Jones , Theme from Cleopatra Jones (1973), which he recorded with The Mainstreeters. For The Chokin 'Kind he received a Grammy for Best R&B Singer in 1970 . One of his most successful albums, Drowning in the Sea of Love , was directed by Philly soul producers Gamble & Huff .
His last minor hits in the early 1980s were produced by country singer Porter Wagoner . Further recordings for smaller labels were no longer successful. A comeback attempt in 1985 with the LP Mr. Right failed. In the late 1980s, Simon withdrew from the secular music business and devoted himself to his Christian faith and gospel . He later served as a minister in an evangelical church in Illinois.
Simon was one of the most important exponents of Southern Soul .
