Seldon Powell

Seldon Powell (* 15. November 1928 in Lawrenceville in Virginia ; † 25. January 1997 , Hempstead , New York ) was an American soul jazz , swing and rhythm and blues - tenor saxophonist and flutist .

Powell attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York until 1957 . At the beginning of his career Powell played with swing musicians such as Lucky Millinder (1949-1951), Sy Oliver , Erskine Hawkins , Neal Hefti , Don Redman (1952-1955), the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra and Louis Bellson . In 1958 he was in Europe with Benny Goodman and in 1959 played with Woody Herman and His Orchestra . In the 1960s he turned more to soul jazz and worked with Clark Terry (1963) and Buddy Rich (1960). He worked for television and as a freelancer in New York in the 1960s. In 1968 he was with the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra at the Berkeley Jazz Festival. During his career he has recorded with Big Joe Turner , Billy VerPlanck (1958), Friedrich Gulda (1956), Charlie Byrd , Eddie Jefferson , Tony Aless , Ernie Wilkins , Gato Barbieri , Joe Thomas and the 7th Avenue Stompers .
