Tropic Thunder is an action comedy from 2008. It was directed by Ben Stiller , who also co-produced the film, took on one of the leading roles and wrote the script with Justin Theroux and Etan Cohen .
action
The Vietnam epic Tropic Thunder is said to mark the return of the action star Tugg Speedman, who sees this film as his last big chance to win an Oscar (his portrayal of a disabled person for this purpose was unsuccessful). To ensure the film's success, five-time Oscar winner Kirk Lazarus, rapper Alpa Chino and famous comedian Jeff Portnoy are hired for the film. As a follower of Method Acting , Lazarus had his skin surgically dyed black to play an African American soldier. The director is the Briton Damien Cockburn based on the book by Vietnam veteran John "Four Leaf" Tayback.
Filming turns out to be difficult for Cockburn, as the airs of his stars drive up production costs and he draws the ire of studio boss Les Grossman. This threatens the newcomer to directing with completely stopping production. Veteran and screenwriter Tayback advises him to expose the stars in the middle of the jungle and drive them through a hell that is staged by him and a special effects expert. The actors are said to be filmed by hidden cameras.
When the director exposes the stars in the wilderness, he himself is killed by an old mine that he accidentally steps on. Tugg Speedman believes this is just a trick and continues to play his role, while the other actors are increasingly insecure and then let Speedman go on alone. Speedman accidentally kills a panda on the first night . He is very shocked about this, as he actually supports a campaign to protect panda bears.
The region is controlled by drug gangs who capture Speedman. The gang leader is a young boy who only lets Speedman live because he is a big fan of his movie Simple Jack . The drug gang's ransom demands fall on deaf ears with the studio boss, while Speedman's agent Rick Peck worries about his star. Grossman offers Rick to give up his star and instead collect the sum insured.
The group of other actors eventually arrives at the camp where Speedman is being held. Portnoy's heroin addiction almost fails the liberation, but with the help of the special effects expert, the alleged Vietnam veteran Tayback and his agent Rick Peck, they finally manage to free Speedman and flee in a helicopter. With the help of recordings from the hidden cameras, the film is finished. In the end, the $ 400 million film won eight Academy Awards. Among other things, Speedman wins an Oscar for the best leading role. Grossman is satisfied and dances alone in his office.
backgrounds
The film was shot in Los Angeles and Hawaii . Its production amounted to an estimated 92 million US dollars . The film opened in US cinemas on August 13, 2008. The German theatrical release followed on September 18, 2008. The film grossed around 188 million US dollars in cinemas around the world, including around 106.8 million US dollars in US cinemas.
Disability associations said that "the film spreads hateful messages". The director of the Down Syndrome Group , David C. Tolleson, complained: "After going to the cinema I felt almost physically injured". Ben Stiller replied: “We don't make fun of black people or the disabled. The film is a satire of actors who take themselves too seriously and play roles they shouldn't. The gags are practically at our expense. "
Reviews
The film received mostly positive reviews. The film review portal Rotten Tomatoes gives 82% positive reviews for the film and it has a Metascore of 71 out of 100 on Metacritic .
Kirk Honeycutt wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on July 26, 2008 that the comedy managed to combine sophistication and satire. They mock spoiled actors, media tycoons and war films, all of whom are easy targets - but they are accurately and consistently mocked. Downey junior delivered "a great comedic performance"; Stiller manages, however, that all actors would get their share of the limelight.
Todd McCarthy wrote in Variety magazine on July 28, 2008 that the film only caused a few hollow laughs in viewers. The antics are thin, monotonous and redundant.
In the newspaper Die Welt on September 14, 2008, Harald Peters praised the "wonderfully absurd idea of having the American Robert Downey junior play an Australian actor who plays a colored soldier". Even the smallest supporting roles are “filled with wonderful actors who charge regardless of loss”.
Eric Pfeil wrote in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on September 18, 2008 that the rough plot overview already showed that Stiller intended to create “a Hollywood satire that should overtake all other Hollywood satires on the shoulder with hooters and grimaces”. The film is "a single high school graduation trip of the modern MTV cynicism, a clever, multiple broken student prank". In the film, the politically incorrect would be put on “funny, colorful hats”. Pfeil sees a particular irony in the fact that the production budget surpasses the satirized gigantomance of Hollywood cinema. In terms of acting he approved of Stiller and Jack Black good performances, which would move "however on familiar territory". The depiction of Kirk Lazarus by Robert Downey junior, who "only with difficulty suppressed his Australian accent", described the critic as "memorable" and advised to experience it in the original version.
Awards
Supporting actor Robert Downey Jr. was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe award . Tom Cruise was nominated for a Golden Globe Award (Best Supporting Actor) .
