history
The deaf school was founded in 1995 by Dr. Ulrich Hase, head of the rehabilitation center for the hearing impaired in Rendsburg. It goes back to an initiative of the German Association of the Deaf because too few people are active in the facilities for the hearing impaired.
The founding of the school is related to the struggle for the recognition of German sign language as a full-fledged language.
Pedagogical approach
The motto of the deaf college is: deaf and hard of hearing need deaf and hard of hearing
The hearing impairment should not be seen as a limitation, but as a strength. It is an advantage because deaf and hard-of-hearing specialists have mastered various forms of visual communication, German sign language or signs accompanying spoken language.
In the pedagogical discussion, special schools are often fundamentally questioned under the key words school integration and inclusion . For the group of the severely hearing-impaired, it should be noted that for them accessibility means access to non-hindering communication and isolation is to be avoided. Inclusion requires the involvement of those affected. Therefore, the preparation for a job in inclusive institutions is another focus of the school.
classes
The lessons take place with a bilingual approach. All lesson content is signed. There is a special communication training with which the students are prepared for teamwork with hearing colleagues. Lessons take place in small classes.
Boarding school
The students can live in the TSBW boarding school , Rendsburg branch.
Jobs
The school regards it as its task to reduce reservations about the work of the hearing impaired in social professions. Work-related internships throughout Germany are an important tool.
After completing their training, the students mainly work in kindergartens, boarding schools, schools, dormitories, old people's and nursing homes, outpatient services for the hearing impaired, in integration facilities or facilities for people with dementia or cognitive impairments in which spoken language communication plays a lesser role.
