The Theodor Schäfer Vocational Training Center is a vocational training center in Husum for around 1000  trainees with around 400 employees (as of 2017). It was founded on November 15, 1965 and bears the name of the German theologian Theodor Schäfer . The factory site was gradually built on the former site of a hospital, a contact point for war invalids and a workshop for the disabled. The sponsor is the Diakonie-Hilfswerk Schleswig-Holstein (DHW) in the group North German Society for Diakonie (NGD) based in Rendsburg.

People with the following disabilities can complete training at the TSBW. People with multiple disabilities are also given the opportunity to receive suitable training.

education

The TSBW offers a comprehensive package of vocational training measures.
People who have to orientate themselves in their professional life or are unsure of their abilities can do various internships to find a job and try out work in the training workshops.
Social training for dealing with other apprentices and the trainers as well as additional school lessons are offered in order to achieve a similar level of education for the actual start of training.

Apprenticeships

The TSBW offers 70 apprenticeships in twelve occupational fields (as of 2017). The training period is generally three years.

retraining

At TSBW Husum, retraining is also carried out for young adults who are no longer able to work in their previous job due to accident or illness. Opportunities for finding, training and qualifying a profession are also open to these people. TSBW branch offices in this area are the North German Rehabilitation Advice Center Hamburg (focus on the hearing impaired) and the training and integration centers in Heide and Husum.

There are six boarding school areas on the premises, which enable constant (also medical / therapeutic) care. The boarding schools are divided into single and double rooms. Further apartments are available in the city area. A suitable environment is therefore available for every type of disability and level of development.

Pastoral care

In the sense of a diaconal institution, a pastor is always present at the TSBW as a contact person for the adolescents. Services and devotions are also the responsibility of this pastor.

leisure

A leisure center has its own terrace, a field with basket nets for basketball games, its own tennis fields and a soccer field with goals. The house also offers activities such as disco evenings, concerts and theater, as well as a cafeteria.

1945-1948 In 1945 three severely disabled and three slightly injured persons moved permanently into the former Husum imperial barracks. The six injured war returnees made simple small items in order to be able to contribute to everyday needs with the sale. Shortly after the Second World War , in 1946 in Flensburg - Mürwik, the Mürwiker handicapped workshops of the non-profit association Disabled Work Schleswig-Holstein eV were founded on November 15, 1948 as a self-help organization for the disabled eV was affiliated. The Husum Disabled Work was funded by the Provost Office Husum-Bredstedt.

The aim of the disabled workers was the reintegration of the war disabled through retraining and training in the trades of tailors, saddlers, upholsterers, shoemakers and carpenters.

1949 The handicapped works became the establishment of the inner provost house Husum-Bredstedt for the retraining and training of war invalids. This ensured financing.
1950 With the help of the Evangelical Church and the State of Schleswig-Holstein, the plant was able to expand after a few years so that from 1950 a large complex with several workshops was created in sections.
1951 Since November 23, the disabled people's work officially expanded its activities to include the training of accident victims and the physically handicapped.
April 1, 1952

In close cooperation with the training workshops for the disabled, but as a special facility of the Inner Mission of the Husum-Bredstedt Propstei, an apprentice dormitory was opened. This was built in order to offer all groups of apprentices, disabled, physically disabled, displaced and local apprentices who lived in the wider area of ​​the city and had no training opportunities there, a place to live if they were training in Husum.

1958 Start of training in the metal sector in the newly created rooms of the training workshops.
1959 The disabled workers and the apprentice dormitory, previously sponsored by the Husum-Bredstedt church district, were officially transferred to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Schleswig-Holstein as a special fund .
1961 The apprentice dormitory was expanded. The handicapped work received additional workshops.
1965 On April 1, the two institutions were connected, and on November 15, the official name of Theodor-Schäfer-Berufsbildungswerk was announced.
1966 For the first time, disabled girls were also included. Construction draftsman training began with four girls with hearing loss in the old shoemaker's workshop.
1967 Construction of a locksmith's shop, start of training as a mechanic, implementation of career-finding measures.
1968 A property in the city area of ​​Husum was rented as an outdoor boarding school.
1969 Another workshop for the disabled has been set up on the ground floor of this boarding school .

1972 Start of training in electrical engineering, precision mechanics, seamstresses and interior decorators.
