Zoolander

Zoolander 2 is a 2016 American comedy film directed by and with Ben Stiller . The film is the sequel to the 2001 film Zoolander .

action

The film is set ten years after the events of Zoolander . When a number of pop stars are systematically murdered, Valentina Valencia, an employee of "Fashion Interpol ", tries to find out who is behind it. She asks the former model Derek Zoolander, who has since retired from the fashion business, for help. Zoolander agrees, hoping to regain custody of his son, which he was deprived of some time ago. Valencia also asks an old friend of Zoolander, Hansel McDonald, for help, and so the two are reunited.

As part of the investigation, Zoolander and McDonald finally meet Zoolander's son, who lives in an orphanage and is very overweight. Shortly afterwards, however, Zoolander junior is kidnapped by a number of fashion designers. They believe in an old legend according to which Zoolander junior is said to have a holy ancestor and the consumption of his blood guarantees eternal youth . Just before they can kill Zoolander junior to drink his blood, they are discovered and stopped by Zoolander, McDonald and Valencia. With the help of Sting , who arrives at that moment, they can kill the leader of the fashion designers.

Six months later, Zoolander and Valentina are a couple and live with Derek junior and their newborn daughter Darlene. Zoolander and McDonald have both started modeling again and Derek junior is now also starting their careers.

The film came out 15 years after the first part, Zoolander . Director Ben Stiller expressed interest in making a sequel to Zoolander back in December 2008 and began working on a script with Justin Theroux . This was finally completed in January 2011.

On March 10, 2015 were Stiller and Owen Wilson together as Derek Zoolander and Hansel McDonald at the Paris Fashion Week in order for Zoolander 2 to advertise.

The film was shot from April 7th to July 13th 2015 in the film city of Cinecittà in Rome  . It was released in theaters in the United States on February 12, 2016 and in Germany on February 18, 2016.

As in the first part , Zoolander 2 featured a number of celebrities playing themselves. Katy Perry , Neil deGrasse Tyson , Tommy Hilfiger , Naomi Campbell , Justin Bieber , Lewis Hamilton , Kiefer Sutherland , Susan Boyle , ASAP Rocky , MC Hammer , Anna Wintour , Marc Jacobs , Kate Moss , Alexander Wang , Valentino , Katie Couric, among others , Christiane Amanpour , Jane Pauley , Natalie Morales , Soledad O'Brien , Don Lemon , Matt Lauer , Willie Nelson and Susan Sarandon .

Beck Bennett , Jerry Stiller (Ben Stiller's father), Jourdan Dunn , Ariana Grande , Christina Hendricks , John Malkovich , Mika , Skrillex , Alexander Skarsgård , Karlie Kloss and Andy Dick do not appear as herself, but in other smaller roles .

Grossing results

The film grossed around USD 56 million worldwide and thus just about covered its budget of around USD 50 million.

criticism

Zoolander 2 received rather negative reviews from critics. On the Rotten Tomatoes website , it failed to convince with a rating of 23% from 202 rated reviews and an average rating of 4.5 / 10.

Der Spiegel judged that Zoolander 2 is essentially "related to haute couture , as it were as a cinematic antithesis to the terribly practical functional clothing: without a baseless purpose, only committed to pure play, actually intolerable and precisely for that reason irresistible."

The film dienst found: “The brightly colored, rapidly staged parody wants to surpass the previous film in every respect, but spans the arc of satirical tips and countless cameo appearances by stars of the fashion, music and film worlds so that it is in his Clumsiness downright implodes. "

The online editorial team of Focus  said: “ Zoolander 2 is a comedy with a great sharp, surprising, but also sometimes annoying humor. [...] Gag follows [...] after Gag without pausing. The film was nominated for Choice Movie: Comedy at the 2016 Teen Choice Awards , but lost to Ride Along: Next Level Miami .

At the Golden Raspberry 2017 , Kristen Wiig won the award for worst supporting actress . The film got 7 other nominations: Worst Picture , Worst Director , Worst Actor (Ben Stiller), Worst Supporting Actor (Will Ferrell and Owen Wilson), Worst Screen Couple (Ben Stiller & Owen Wilson), and Worst Remake or Sequel .
