Susan Boyle
Susan Boyle Magda Lane (* 1. April 1961 in Blackburn , West Lothian ) is a Scottish singer who a wider audience in 2009 for her performance in the third season of the talent show Britain's Got Talent was known. She achieved international fame through her performance of "I Dreamed a Dream" from the musical Les Misérables .
Articles about them appeared globally; Videos of her performance were viewed tens of millions of times in the first week. In the casting show, she finally reached second place. Her debut album I dreamed a dream , released in 2009, was a national and international commercial success, as did the two follow-up albums The Gift (2010) and Someone to Watch Over Me (2011).
Life
Boyle is the youngest of nine children and lives in Blackburn, a town in West Lothian near Edinburgh in Scotland. She was teased by her classmates because of her appearance; Schoolmates attributed a learning disability to her and teased her for it. The weekly magazine Der Spiegel reported in December 2013 that she was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome , as well as above-average intelligence; Susan Boyle expressed relief at the diagnosis.
Since childhood she received singing lessons in Livingston , Scotland. However, she ended her singing career to take care of her ailing mother, who died in 2007 at the age of 91. She sang for the first time since her mother's death when she appeared in the regional final of “Britain's Got Talent”. Boyle mentioned in the Washington Post that she took part in the competition in memory of her late mother. This had urged her to dare to appear in front of a larger audience than the parish church.
Boyle is unmarried and was unemployed prior to her singing career.
TV appearance
In the first round of the third season of Britain's Got Talent , Boyle performed "I Dreamed a Dream" from the musical Les Misérables on April 11, 2009. The performance became widespread and the video for it was viewed over 300 million times on the online video platform Seen youtube . Boyle is said to have been touched and astonished by this reaction.
Before her performance, the jury and audience were skeptical, especially when she presented herself confidently and named a career as a professional singer and Elaine Paige as a role model as the goal of participation, despite being 47 years old . During the performance and afterwards, however, it received strong positive feedback and approval from the audience and the jury. The television broadcast was recorded in Scotland in January 2009.
On May 24, 2009 Boyle was able to qualify with the title "Memory" from the Musical Cats for the finals of the competition, in which they took second place on May 30, 2009. After the performance, she was so exhausted that she had to be taken to a hospital.
In the ITV special I Dreamed A Dream: The Susan Boyle Story , which was later produced , there was a duet with her idol Elaine Paige , which has also been very successful on YouTube with over 36 million views so far.
Media coverage
Many British newspapers reported on Boyle's appearance and reaction to it on the Internet. Colin Robertson, a journalist for the British tabloid The Sun, called her "Paula Potts" after the winner of the first season, Paul Potts .
The international press also became aware of her, including the German news magazine Der Spiegel , but also magazines in Asia and North America reported on Boyle. In the US, ABC News announced that Boyle might be the UK's newest pop sensation and dubbed her "The Woman Who Silenced Simon Cowell ." Here, too, several journalists drew parallels to Paul Potts, who had also become famous as an unexpected vocal talent through the British casting show.
Several US television stations also responded in the form of satellite interviews, including CBS , ABC and FOX .
However, the most important role in spreading Boyle's fame was played by websites such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter . The video of their appearance on YouTube was accessed almost 2.5 million times in the first 72 hours. On April 17, 2009, six days after the appearance, it was the most viewed video of the month with 22 million views. The Los Angeles Times wrote that the popularity of this video was due to its emotional breadth in a short time frame, which makes it perfect for the internet where short clips matter. Boyle's fame was also spread through the Twitter website, including Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore . When she found out about it, Boyle admitted that he had never heard of Kutcher and even if the name "Demi Moore" meant something to her, he knew relatively little about her. Nevertheless, she thanked both of them for their support.
In addition to the media coverage of the hype surrounding Susan Boyle, the singer also boosted sheet music sales. The track she sang, "I Dreamed a Dream", was one of the best-selling items on Musicnotes.com shortly after the performance.
Further career
Susan Boyle's album I Dreamed a Dream became the 2009 UK first-week debut album with the highest sales. Her other albums were also successful worldwide.
Many other appearances followed: Boyle performed in front of the Queen on May 13, 2012 in Windsor Castle on the occasion of the diamond jubilee and sang " Mull of Kintyre " by Paul McCartney . In November 2012 she sang a duet with her idol Donny Osmond in Las Vegas .
In July 2013 Susan Boyle went on a critically acclaimed seven-concert tour through Scotland. It was the first time that she performed entire evenings live alone. This concert tour served to prepare for an international tour that took place in 2014.
In December 2013, the film The Christmas Candle opened in British cinemas , in which Boyle not only sings, but also played a supporting role.
Charity CD
Back in 1999, Boyle recorded the song Cry Me a River for a charity CD at a school in Whitburn . This recording was also published on the Internet after its appearance at the casting show and was immediately welcomed. At the beginning of 2010 she also wrote the song Everybody Hurts by REM as Helping Haiti Charity Song together with Leona Lewis , Rod Stewart , Mariah Carey , Cheryl Cole , Mika , Michael Bublé , Joe McElderry , Miley Cyrus , James Blunt , Robbie Williams , Gary Barlow , Mark Owen , Jon Bon Jovi , James Morrison , Alexandra Burke , Aston Merrygold , Marvin Humes , Shane Filan , Mark Feehily and Kylie Minogue .
honors and awards
