It all starts in his birthplace, Lubbock, Texas . Buddy and his friends keep playing rock 'n' roll instead of country songs on the local radio station. Nevertheless, the station's manager gives them a record deal with Decca Records , where they record country songs.

To play the music they love, Buddy and his band go to Norman Petty's studio in Clovis, New Mexico . Buddy calls his band The Crickets . There they record many of his well-known pieces. They are later invited to the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York City, because they are mistaken for a dark-skinned band. The audience accepts them despite their fair skin because the music is “black”. You are performing there with a colored singer. Buddy meets Maria Elena Santiago in New York and marries her. When another studio recordings in Clovis, there are differences of opinion and he separates from Norman Petty and the Crickets.

At the end of January 1959, Buddy goes on tour with other stars (including Ritchie Valens , The Big Bopper ). After their performance in Clear Lake, Iowa on February 3, 1959, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and Big Bopper want to fly to the next venue. The machine crashes in a snow storm and all occupants were killed. (" The Day the Music Died ")

In the musical, the pieces by Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and Big Bopper are played and sung live on stage by the actors.
