action

Sheryl and Richard Hoover live in Albuquerque, in the southern United States , with their daughter Olive, Sheryl's son Dwayne, and Richard's father . Young Olive has a dream. She wants to win a beauty pageant. In the last Miss election in Albuquerque, she came in second. Her father Richard is trying to find a publisher as an author with his first work of his "Nine-Step Program - How to Become a Winner".

When Olive found out that she was subsequently awarded the victory in the New Mexico state's Little Miss Sunshine election , she wanted to travel to Los Angeles for the nationwide decision and win the competition. Together with the silent, 15-year-old brother Dwayne, who does not want to speak again until his wish to become a test pilot in the Air Force has been fulfilled, the unconventional grandfather who is also Olive's trainer, the suicidal, homosexual uncle Frank and The chubby girl sets off for her parents in a VW bus to California .

The journey in the yellow VW bus is characterized by arguments and technical difficulties, but it also brings the different actors closer to one another. When the heroin addicted grandfather dies of an overdose and the formalities that need to be dealt with threaten Olive's participation in the contest, the family decides to steal the body from the hospital and continue the journey with it. In the course of the journey, each of the actors experiences a disappointment. Dwayne, the son of Sheryl's ex-husband, discovers that he is color blind and therefore cannot become a test pilot. Uncle Frank meets the man in the middle of nowhere with whom he is unhappily in love and who drove him to attempt suicide. Richard, who, as a motivational speaker, gives lectures on achieving goals and divides people into “winners” and “losers”, learns that his book about the “nine-step program” that he has developed to help you is a “ Winner ”will not be published and so the family is in even more financial trouble than before. To make matters worse, little Olive realizes that she may not have the perfect model measurements.

The family manages to reach the competition just in time. While her competitors perform dances and songs trimmed to perfection on stage, Olive - who clearly stands out from the other participants through her childish disguise - performs a lewd striptease show that drives the conservative organizers to despair, with the exception of a former beauty queen who sits on the jury and is apparently amused and ridiculed the nature of children's beauty competitions . Olive's father is told to stop her performance and take her off the stage; instead, he decides to dance with her on stage, and the rest of the family joins them. After this scandal, Olive is banned from ever participating in a California beauty pageant, a ban the family can live with. But the shared adventure has welded the fragile family together.

Emergence

Screenwriter Michael Arndt wrote the story for a year and wrote about a hundred drafts. He himself grew up with a VW bus and everything that is related to the car in the film happened to him and his family. Arndt showed the script to the two producers Ron Yerxa and Albert Berger . Although no one was interested at first, Yerxa and Berger were able to persuade Marc Turtletaub and David Friendly of Deep River Productions to buy the script.

Before Little Miss Sunshine, the married directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris had almost exclusively made music videos and commercials , occasionally also short films . This tragic comedy was her feature film debut. When they found out about the story, they were initially not interested; However, once they had read the script and got closer to the characters, they recognized the potential of the material and wanted to film it.

The eight million dollar realization took about five years. The production studios questioned the commercial success of the film because they feared an ensemble film by inexperienced directors and an established Hollywood star was not intended for the cast. “They look at their list of actors from A to Z and want one, at most two, main characters that they can portray on the poster. But that was not the story we wanted to tell, ”said Jonathan Dayton in an interview. The makers of the film did not want an extremely popular actor because he would have pushed the others into a corner.

Castings for the cast of Olive took place in every English-speaking country. When Abigail Breslin applied for the role, she was six years old and too small. Since shooting in Arizona and California didn't begin until two years later, she was nearly nine and had experience in several other films. The roles of Richard, Sheryl, Dwayne and the grandfather weren't a problem, but the casting of Frank with Steve Carell was. Carell, who later became known for cinema successes such as Jungfrau (40), male, sucht ... , was not yet very well known at the time and the production studios doubted that he could be an asset to the film.

The Wiesbaden Film Evaluation Center , which awarded the film the second best rating “Valuable”, praised “[…] the convincing play of the six protagonists as well as the fine nuances with which the deliberately intrusive cliché of the American belief in 'wanting to be the winner at any price 'is caricatured ", added, however:" The positive impression is clouded by some overly sedate opening sequences that take the story much of its pace. "The Austrian Youth Media Commission gave the film the rating" highly recommended for ages 14+ " the film was praised in particular “because of its complexity and diverse human values”.
