Regis Philbin (2009)

Regis Francis Xavier Philbin (born August 25, 1931 in New York City , † July 24, 2020 in Greenwich , Connecticut ) was an American television presenter . He was in business from the 1950s and one of the most recognizable faces on American television. His best-known shows include Live with Regis and Kelly , Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? and the casting show America’s Got Talent . Philbin holds the Guinness Record for most of the time a person has spent in front of a television camera (he was awarded 15,662 hours in 2006, after which he was still active).

Early life

Philbin grew up with his parents Francis "Frank" and Filomena "Florence" (née Boscia) Philbin in the Bronx, New York . His father was of Irish descent while his mother was of Albanian descent. Although always considered an only child, he announced on February 1, 2007 that he had a brother, Frank M. Philbin. He had died of an illness a few days earlier. Philbin said his brother asked him not to speak of him in the media.

After his school career at Our Lady of Solace Grammar School and Cardinal Hayes High School in New York, he studied sociology at the University of Notre Dame from 1949 . After serving in the United States Navy , Philbin got his first television experience doing some minor temporary jobs.

Talk show career

Philbin had his first talk show on the Californian regional broadcaster KGTV. Since he did not have a large editorial team behind him for financial reasons, he began each program with a short conversation between him and the viewers about the topics of the day. This “host chat” later became his trademark. As Joey Bishop's sidekick on The Joey Bishop Show , Philbin had his first major role in 1967.

Between 1975 and 1983 Philbin co-hosted Sarah Purcell and later Cyndy Garvey on the AM Los Angeles morning show on KABC-TV. The program then experienced a significant increase in ratings. In 1981 he also hosted a morning show on NBC for 18 weeks with Mary Hart .

Also in the 1980s Philbin hosted Lifestyles with Regis Philbin on Lifetime Television.

Game show career

In addition to his talk shows, Philbin also moderated more or less successful game shows. The first was The Neighbors , which ABC discontinued after a short time in 1975. The show was about a candidate having to guess which of her neighbors were spreading rumors about her. In the same year he co-hosted the ABC show Almost anything goes , the American adaptation of the British quiz show It's A Knockout . However, this show was also canceled due to poor ratings.

Philbin was more successful with Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? , the American version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? . After initially great successes in 1999, the quotas also fell over time. In 2001 Philbin won an Emmy Award for "Outstanding Game Show Host". After the broadcast of ABC was already discontinued due to the high costs, it was revived in 2002 with Meredith Vieira as presenter. Philbin hosted Who Wants to Be a Super Millionaire in 2004 . This was a modified version of the original concept, in which the candidates could win up to 10 million US dollars .

In November 2005, ABC announced that Philbin would be hosting This is our Life . In August 2006, however, it was announced that his contract option had expired and he did not want to extend it.

The first season of America's Got Talent talent show was also hosted by Philbin in the summer of 2006. However, since he had to commute between New York and Los Angeles in the meantime (he had another show at the same time), he handed over the moderation of the second season to Jerry Springer .

Private life

Philbin was married for the second time from 1970. From his first marriage (1955–1968) had two children, as did his second marriage. Philbin died in July 2020 at the age of 88.
