geography
La Crau is at the eastern end of an extensive plain in the midst of a number of small hamlets that are located at the foot of Mont Fenouillet, a foothill of the Massif des Maures in a horticultural landscape.
history
The first written mention of the place as Carum comes from the year 1376. Until the separation from Hyères in 1853, La Crau was administered by the nearby town. In the 19th century, the cork production and oil mills were the most important economic factors. On August 22, 1944, La Crau was liberated from German occupation by the Allies. Later the 312nd transit camp for German prisoners of war was located there until at least mid-1947 .
Population development
La Crau owes a strong population growth to its location between the industrial city of Toulon and the holiday resort of Hyères. From the mid-1970s to the end of the 20th century, the population nearly tripled.
