Le Beausset is a French municipality with 9736 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .

geography

Le Beausset is located about ten kilometers northwest of Toulon in a valley floor characterized by vineyards and pine forests in the south of the Massif de la Sainte-Baume . The rocks from the Cretaceous Period are rich in fossils .

history

In the 12th century the first evidence of the place called Balcetum and Baucetum at that time can be found . The etymology of the name is unclear and can be of both Provencal and Latin origins. Until the place was given its current name at the beginning of the 19th century against the will of the mayor at the time for reasons that were not further clarified, it was called Le Bausset . Le Beausset was a fief of the Baux family and later the Viscounts and the Bishops of Marseille .

The old village (Beausset-Vieux), which was built around a fortification that was the scene of numerous armed conflicts from the Middle Ages to the Huguenot Wars , was abandoned by its inhabitants in 1506, who moved to the plain below. In 1615 the population asked Cardinal Richelieu to have the château destroyed.

The battalion of the citizen militia from Le Beausset took an active part in the French Revolution when Napoleon Bonaparte's army stayed there in 1793 during the siege and recapture of Toulon.
