View from the village to the port

Bormes-les-Mimosas (until February 15, 1968 Bormes , Provence Bouarmo ) is a French municipality with 8102 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) on the Mediterranean coast at the foot of the Massif des Maures in the department of Var in the region Provence-Alpes French Riviera . The municipality extends on a hillside from the Mediterranean coast to 642 m above sea level.

history

St. Franz von Paola , patron saint of the community

The place was first mentioned in 1056 as Borma , but archaeological findings point to a settlement since Celtic times. The port of Brégançon, which today belongs to Bormes, was an important transshipment point for lead and granite from nearby mines in ancient times . Numerous relics have been preserved from the time of Roman rule.

The village was destroyed several times in the Middle Ages. The Saracens plundered it repeatedly since 730, and the corsairs in 1393. The Spanish raided the place a few years earlier. The Moors burned it down in 1529, the Genoese Andrea Doria in 1539, and a few years later, in 1579, during the wars of religion, the troops of the Comte de Carcès .

St. Franz von Paola was made the patron saint of the community because he is said to have put a stop to the plague that raged in 1482 . A statue on Place St-François and the 16th century chapel dedicated to the patron reminds of this today.

In 1913, part of the district was slammed into the newly founded municipality of Le Lavandou . The addition of the addition les Mimosas to the name dates back to 1968. Napoléon III. brought the mimosa trees back from his campaigns in Mexico in 1867 and had them cultivated in Bormes.

The Fort de Brégançon (the fortress of Brégancon) on an island in front of it has served as the French President's summer residence since 1968 .

Mimosa Street

Bormes-les-Mimosas is the starting point of the Mimosa Route , also known as the Mimosa Route (French: La Route du Mimosa ; English: Golden Route ). It is a 130 km tourist route that runs along the Côte d'Azur via Rayol-Canadel-sur-Mer , Sainte-Maxime , Saint-Raphaël , Mandelieu-la-Napoule , Tanneron and Pégomas to Grasse . From January to mid-March, the yellow acacia plants , which originally came from Australia , are in bloom.

Attractions

Eglise St-Trophyme
  • Place St-Francois : Here is a statue in memory of Saint Francis de Paula. Opposite it, the chapel from the 16th century, surrounded by dark cypress trees, is consecrated. Next to it is an old cemetery on which there is also a monument to the painter Jean-Charles Cazin .
  • Eglise St-Trophyme : The three-aisled, Romanesque-influenced building dates from the 18th century. A sundial with the motto Ab hora diei ad horam Dei ("From the hour of the day to the hour of God") is attached to the facade . On the pillars inside the church are six gilded wooden reliquaries from the time the church was built.
  • Fort de Brégançon (not public)

Personalities

Bormes is the home of the corsairs Hippolyte Mourdeille (1785-1807) and Hippolyte de Bouchard (1780-1837), who later became the Argentine revolutionary. The painter Alfred Courmes (1898–1993) was also born here.
