geography

The municipality of Évenos is about ten kilometers northwest of Toulon . It is made up of three villages: Sainte Anne d'Evenos , today's administrative center of the municipality, the old village of Évenos ( Nebre in Provencal ) on a hill and Le Broussan .

history

A few centuries before our era, the region was inhabited by Celto-Ligurian tribes who have left many traces in the Destel gorges. In this gorge was the village of Saint Estève, in which there was a large chapel with three apses and a leprosy station operated by the Templars. The Romans built an oppidum on the remains of a Greek tower .

Louis IX of France, Saint Louis stayed here on his return from a crusade. The Saracens destroyed the village several times. The residents who inhabited the current location of Évenos began to fortify the village with a medieval castle in the tenth century.

Around this castle there is a second rampart, which is now partially destroyed. Only the sidewalk, the “chemin de ronde” is still there. A church is part of the castle fortress, it was fortified, the defense platform can be reached via a staircase that leads down from the “chemin de ronde”. It was rebuilt in the eighteenth century and got a roof and a small bell tower.
