Belgentier is a French commune with 2,429 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .

geography

Belgentier is located about 30 km as the crow flies north of Toulon in the upper Gapeautal between hills covered with fields and trees. There are numerous gorges on the east side of the Massif de Morières .

history

First known as Belcenceig and Beigenciacum in the 11th century, it was ruled by the Counts of Marseille, and later by the Saint-Victor Abbey .

In September 1651, 84 people were killed in a flood of the Gapeau.

Since 2006 there has been a community partnership with the community Geschwenda , since 2019 part of the community Geratal , in Thuringia .

Personalities

Belgentier is the birthplace of the French scholar, collector, antiquarian and patron Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc (1580–1637).
