Solliès-Ville is a French commune with 2,450 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of Solliès-Pont in the arrondissement of Toulon .
geography
The old village of Solliès-Ville is located on a hill overlooking the Gapeautal . Further down, Solliès-Pont is on the plain, known for its orchards, where cherries and figs are grown in particular.
history
Solliès-Ville was formerly part of the municipality of Solliès, which in 1799 was divided into the municipalities of Solliès-Ville , Solliès-Pont , Solliès-Toucas and Solliès-Farlède .
Attractions
The church is an interesting Romanesque building. Inside you can see on the left a beautiful retable from the 17th century. Between this and the pulpit there is another retable from the 14th century. The main altar, which has a ciborium from the 15th century, consists of a single stone 6 m high. The organ was also built by a monk in the 15th century. It is made of walnut and is one of the oldest organs in France. In the crypt is the burial place of the Lords of Solliès.
Personalities
The poet, novelist and playwright Jean Aicard (1848–1921) had a house in Solliès-Ville, which is frequented by numerous admirers of the poet. A small museum has been set up in the house.
