La Garde is a French municipality with 25,126 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .

geography

La Garde is located east of Toulon in an extensive plain halfway between Toulon and Hyères in the catchment area of ​​the two cities.

history

The place was first mentioned as Guarda in 1056 . In the 13th century it was a fiefdom of the bishops of Toulon, later it was under the lords of Castellane , Glandevès and Thomas . It served the city of Toulon as an observation post during the Middle Ages. During the Huguenot Wars in the 16th century, La Garde was captured several times and completely devastated during the War of the Spanish Succession by the troops of the Duke of Savoy during the siege of Toulon.

In 1894, Le Pradet was detached from La Garde and raised to an independent municipality.

Population development

Since the early 1960s, the community has seen strong population growth. By the end of the 20th century, the population quadrupled to over 25,000.

A traditional industry of the place is the andesite mining for the street paving of Toulon. In agricultural production, vegetables and onions are grown. The quality wines from La Garde are part of the AOC Côtes de Provence .
