Tanneron is a French commune with 1,666 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of Roquebrune-sur-Argens in the Arrondissement of Draguignan .

geography

The place is located in the Tanneron massif named after him, which is generally very sparsely populated and which is geologically shaped by its slate-rich soils. Despite the severe forest fire of 1970, wild mimosas , heather , chestnuts , pines and maquis are crowded together in the sequence of high altitudes .

history

The oppidum of Peygros , located three kilometers northeast of the municipality, is evidence of pre-Roman settlement in the area.

In 1200 the place was first mentioned as Castrum Tannaroni . The name may come from the root word tan , which denotes the bark of chestnut and oak, or it goes back to a pre-European root after which tan stands for mountain. The village belonged to the dominion of Grasse and became an independent municipality in 1825 when it was separated from Callian .

The construction of the Lac de Saint-Cassien dam made tourism more important.
