Les Arcs , including Les Arcs-sur-Argens called, is a commune with 7064 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .

geography

Les Arcs lies in a wide valley at the confluence of the Argens and Réal rivers. Small hills, partly wooded and partly planted, rise to the north. In the south, on the other side of the valley, the foothills of the Massif des Maures with the 301 m high Peynier rise far more steeply . From the higher districts, the visitor has a beautiful panoramic view of the Argen Valley.

The municipality is located about ten kilometers from Draguignan , the former prefecture of the department, and the historic Saracen stronghold of La Garde-Freinet , on an important passage on the way from the sea to the interior. As early as Roman antiquity, a bridge over the Via Aurelia crossed the Argens. The traffic-related weight of Les Arcs finds a modern continuation in the SNCF station on the Marseille – Ventimiglia railway line , where the TGV also stops.

history

In 1010 the Latin name Archos ("arch") was used for the place, which goes back to Castrum de Arcubus .

The Celle-Roubaud Abbey was initially founded as a Benedictine convent in 1038 . From 1260-1499 the abbey was a Carthusian monastery of the Carthusian , from 1504 Franciscan . A winery is attached to the monastery.

From the 12th to the 17th century, Les Arcs was owned by the Villeneuve family, under whose rule the construction of the castle complex began. In 1201 Géraud de Villeneuve was the first lord of the castle to settle in the completed château . In 1670 rulership passed to the Vintimille family.
