history
The beginnings of the history of Le Plan-de-la-Tour go back to prehistoric times. Dolmens , menhirs and arrowheads document the presence of people in the Neolithic megalithic culture and the Bronze Age around 2500 years before our era. Archaeological finds also prove the settlement in the Celtic-Ligurian and Gallo-Roman epochs.
After the Saracen settlement in the early Middle Ages, modern history begins between the 10th and 12th centuries with a small village on a hill, which appears in the sources as the Castrum de Planaturris . In the 15th century, the population retreated to the hinterland, fleeing from the approaching Saracens. Soon the area, which also suffered from plague epidemics, was almost completely deserted. It was not until the 16th century that people slowly settled in the surrounding villages. At the beginning of the 17th century, the current name Plan de la Tour appears in the documents for the first time .
During the French Revolution , Plan-de-la-Tour broke away from La Garde-Freinet and became an independent municipality in 1792. By decree of October 3, 2008, the municipality was renamed Le Plan-de-la-Tour.
