Montauroux is a French municipality with 6411 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . Administratively, it lies in the canton of Roquebrune-sur-Argens and in the Arrondissement of Draguignan .

geography

Montauroux is a municipality in the east of the Var department, on the border with the Alpes-Maritimes department . The location is south-facing in steps between 150 and 400 m, opposite the Esterel Mountains . The Lac de Saint-Cassien , the upper Siagnetal and the nearby forests shape the landscape of the area. Montauroux is about halfway between the Mediterranean Sea, 30 km away, and the nearest ski resorts, 40 km away.

history

In 1592, during the Huguenot Wars , Montauroux was the scene of a battle between the army of Henry IV of France under Jean Louis de Nogaret de La Valette and the Holy League under Charles Emanuel I of Savoy .

Personalities

  • Maurice Floquet (1894–2006), who until his death in November 2006 was the oldest Frenchman and the last living veteran of the First World War , lived in Montauroux.
