Jean Louis de Nogaret de La Valette (* May 1554 at Caumont Castle in Cazaux-Savès , † January 13, 1642 in Loches ) was Duke of Épernon and a French military man .
Life
Like his father Jean de Valette and his grandfather Pierre de Nogaret, sieur de Valette, Jean-Louis pursued a career in the military. He took part in the unsuccessful siege of La Rochelle in 1573 and in the sieges of La Charité-sur-Loire and Issoire (1577) as part of the Huguenot Wars . Before La Rochelle he met the Duke of Anjou , the future King Henry III.
Jean Louis de Nogaret de La Valette has been one of Henry III's closest confidants since 1578. of France, its mignons .
On November 27, 1581 Heinrich III appointed him. to the peer of France and to the duke of Épernon. In 1581 he was appointed Colonel général of the French infantry . In 1586 he became governor of Provence , in 1587 admiral of France and governor of Normandy . He opposed the coronation of Henry of Navarre , but was submitted by this. In 1596 the Duke of Épernon was reconciled with Henry IV. In 1622 he became governor of the Guyenne .
In 1641, Cardinal Richelieu withdrew the governorship and banished him to Loches. He died here on January 13, 1642.

Marriages and offspring
Since 1587 he was married to the wealthy Marguerite de Foix-Candale (* 1567, † 1593), Countess of Candale, Bénauges and Astarac, Captale de Buch . He had four children with her:

- Bernard (* 1592; † 1661), Duke of Épernon, from 1639 Count of Candale;

After the death of his first wife, he married Anne Castelet de Monier for the second time. With her he had a son:
- Jean-Louis (* 1600), called "Chevalier de La Valette".
He also had three children with Diane d'Estrées, a sister of Gabrielle d'Estrées and François-Annibal d'Estrées :
- Louise;
- Louis († 1679), Bishop of Mirepoix (1630–1655) and Carcassonne (1655–1679);
- Bernard, Prior of Bellefonds.
