Bagnols-en-Forêt

Bagnols-en-Forêt ( Provence Banhòus or Bagnòu ) is a French municipality with 2788 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .

geography

Bagnols-en-Forêt lies on the foothills of the Esterel Mountains . The name of the place reflects its location in an extensive forest area of over 4290 hectares. From an administrative point of view, the municipality is assigned to the canton of the town of Fréjus , 18 km away .

climate

Bagnols-en-Forêt enjoys a very pleasant climate, especially in the transition period. The winters can be very severe and cold in the lower part of the village and in the valley floor, in the summer months the maximum temperatures of sometimes over 35 ° C are usually extremely dry and hot. The upper part of the village is located on slopes between forest and sea, which leads to a microclimate that corresponds to the Côte d'Azur in its mildness and balance. The plateau overgrown with oaks and pines guarantees good moisture conditions, which is why there is little risk of forest fires in the place and there is rarely a lack of water.

history

The existence of the place has been documented by documents in Cluny Abbey since 909 .

In the 11th century, the Saint-Denis chapel, now protected as a monument historique , was built on the foundation walls of a Gallo-Roman villa . A fresco from the time the chapel was built shows the resettlement of the place. According to documents in the Lérins monastery , Castrum de Banholis was destroyed in 1392. 80 years later, Urban von Fliscom, who was appointed Bishop of Fréjus by Pope Sixtus IV , had thirty families from Pieve di Teco in Italy - now a twin town of the community - settle in Bagnols-en-Forêt, which was part of his domain.

The Notre-Dame chapel was also built on the foundations of a derelict Gallo-Roman villa from the first century. Notre-Dame was built in 1560, and since 1729 the residents of Bagnol have celebrated the Virgin Mary with a procession to the chapel.

The Saint-Antoine chapel was built in 1660 in a place called the thermal baths . A source stream flows through the surrounding district. The Sainte-Anne chapel was donated shortly before, in 1654, by a Jean Vigneron who wanted to thank Louis XIV for maintaining French citizenship.

The parish church of Saint-Antonin was built in 1704 at the highest point of the village in the place of a former chapel dedicated to the same saint.
