Tourrettes ( okz. Torretas ) is a French municipality with 2884 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of Roquebrune-sur-Argens in the Arrondissement of Draguignan .

geography

Tourrettes is located on a slightly elevated plain in the center of the department of Var and the Arrondissement of Draguignan. The place has grown together with the neighboring community of Fayence. The Riou Blanc flows through the fertile plain around the communes and later flows into the Chautard . To the north and south of the municipality, low, wooded hills rise to 400 to 500 m, which are interrupted by numerous valleys to the south.

history

The area around today's municipality of Tourrettes was settled in prehistoric times. The restored Dolmen de La Verrerie-Vieille bear witness to this past, as do menhirs that were found not far away and were used as capstones. The Roman occupation also left its mark. The remains of a Roman burial site and possibly a Gallo-Roman villa have been discovered near La Grande-Bastide .

The settlement to which today's municipality goes back was first mentioned in 1043 as Torretas . By marriage, the rule passed to the Villeneuve de Tourrettes family , who ruled from 1331 to 1830. The old castle of the lords of Puybresson and Castelet de Valnasque , which was mentioned in the 13th century, was torn down in the Middle Ages. In 1591 the newer castle of Tourrettes, whose lord from the Villeneuve dynasty was a leading Protestant, was destroyed by the Carcistes, the Catholic troops of Jean de Pontevès from Fayence with the help of Charles Emanuel I of Savoy .

Population development

The population in Tourrettes has risen sharply since the early 1960s, as a large influx of people clearly overcompensated for the largely negative birth balance . A birth deficit of around 200 people in the period from 1962 to 1999 is offset by a migration gain of over 1700 people.

Culture and sights

Saint-André church

The historic center of the municipality was built on a hill that slightly towers over the area. The place has retained its medieval character to this day.

  • The clock tower with an attached, wrought-iron bell tower is the last remaining part of the first castle built by the Villeneuve family in the 14th century.
  • The 16th century castle in the center of the village is now a rest home.
  • The Chateau du Puy castle was built in 1830 by General Fabre.
  • The remains of a castle and a fortified village in Puybresson are protected as Inscrit Monument Historique . The keep has four floors and the gate has a pointed arch.
  • Ruins of a square tower and the Castelet family's lodgings can be found in Valnasque.
  • The parish church of Saint-André is of Romanesque origin but was renovated and rebuilt in the 15th and 17th centuries. From the original architecture are the Romanesque hemispherical apse , the gate with a wedge arch and the tympanum decorated with a cross .
  • The Dolmen de la Verrerie-Vieille is located near Tourrettes.
